MAKE Calypso Palette - Birchbox Exclusive

MAKE Colour Calypso Palette

The Calypso Palette by MAKE Colour is a Birchbox-exclusive and a purchase I’d been contemplating for a long-ish time before giving in. I bought it as part of the Limited Edition Vanity Affair box, which I posted about here, but it’s available on Birchbox by itself for $40.

Unlike all the other MAKE palettes which combines eyeshadows and lipsticks, Calypso‘s an eight-pan eyeshadow palette with a cool-toned, blue-leaning selection, mixed with a bit of warmth and some neutrals.

MAKE - Calypso Palette - Pans

The first half (left side) of the pan has Alabaster, which is a really sparkly off-white shade and is present in the Aether* palette (review) and Bentonite Clay, which is a satin bone shade in the top row. The bottom row has Great Lakes, which is a cool medium grey with a bit of a periwinkle slant to it, and Woad, a deep dark indigo that’s also found in the New Medieval palette (review).

The second half (right side) of the pan has Aquamarine, which is basically a bright aquamarine, and Star Anise, a muted copper with bronze flecks which is the warmest this palette goes, in the top row. On the bottom row, there’s Midnight, a matte midnight blue, and Cast Iron, a deep grey with a strong blue lean and is also present in the New Medieval palette.

Swatched, L-R: Alabaster, Bentonite Clay, Great Lakes, Woad, Aquamarine, Star Anise, Midnight, Cast Iron

Like I mentioned in my Birchbox unboxing, this looks very much like MAKE’s New Medieval Palette, except with some of the warmth of its lip colors present in Calypso. Here’s New Medieval (bottom) with Calypso (top):
MAKE Calypso vs MAKE New Medieval Palette

So, MAKE always creates palettes that are very strongly linked with influences. Since Calypso was only available on the Birchbox website, there was a lack of extended literature that I’ve come to expect from MAKE’s palettes. It’s named after the nymph, Calypso, that much I know.

If you know your Odyssey, you might remember Calypso as the nymph that kind of keeps Odysseus trapped on her island, Ogygia, for seven (debatable!) years to make him her immortal husband. The gods intervened and when she was ordered to release him back to the world—and to his waiting wife, Penelope—she gets mad but eventually sends him off with a raft and some food, etc. Calypso, who is the daughter of the Titan Atlas, is also sometimes referred to as Atlantis (literally, “daughter of Atlas”). In that vein, Jean-Jacques Cousteau has a documentary on Atlantis, the legendary lost continent, called Calypso’s Search for Atlantis.

All of this, then, makes the color selection so obvious and really kind of perfect. The blues dissect the complexity of the ocean, the greys display the bleakness of the isolated island, Calypso’s home, which is represented by the warmth of the sparkling neutrals and the earthy tones.

Sidenote: This is partly why I love these palettes so much (and actually, names of collections and palettes, in general, too)! I get to go on a Google spiral which makes me look at a palette with much more love.

Anyway, enough of this! Does the palette itself work out well?

(Yes.)

Here are a few looks I’ve done with it:

LOOK 1

Used: Woad and Midnight on upper lid outer corner, Great Lakes in the crease. Woad on the outer 2/3 of lower lash line, Bentonite Clay on the inner 1/3 of the lower lash line. (More look details here.)

LOOK 2

MAKE Calypso Look 2
Used: Bentonite Clay all over lid, Star Anise lightly on the outer 1/3 and in the crease, Alabaster lightly patted on the center third. Smudged Cast Iron on the outer 1/3 of lash line and Woad applied more thickly and downward on the outer third of upper lash line, the leftover smudged on 1/3 of the lower lash line.

(Products used: Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint in Medium, K-Palette Pencil Liner in Black*, K-Palette 0 Kuma Cover Concealer in 3*, & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil in Bouclé Greige, Nature Republic Eye Primer, K-Palette 1Day Magic Fiber Mascara*, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light and Radiant Light, MAKE Matte Lipstick in Jakarta)

A closer look, since it is very subtle:
KPalette - Pencil Liner, Tightline

LOOK 3

MAKE Calypso - Face 3
Used: Aquamarine on outer 1/3 of upper lid, blended into Bentonite Clay on inner 2/3 of the lid. Midnight blended into the outer 1/2 of upper lash line over a dark brown liner.

(Products used: Ellis Faas Concealer in S204*, Marc Jacobs Highliner in Brown(Out), NYX Powder Blush in Taupe which I re-purchased after I lost the one I was supposed to give to Rae, NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned)

I love the range of looks you can get with this palette. It looks a little restricting, but you can come up with go-to subtle, dramatic, or bold looks with Calypso.

Takashi Murakami's 727

Made-Up History: Takashi Murakami’s 727, 1996

A quick look based on Takashi Murakami’s 727, which features DOB as the main character of the piece. I’ve been intending to do this look for a while, but just never got around to it. Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist who’s known for blurring the lines between “high” and “low” art, that is, fine and commercial art. He has exhibited in international venues (I saw this piece in a retrospective/special exhibit by the Brooklyn Museum many, many years ago) and is involved with many commercial projects such as special edition Louis Vuittons. Unboxing: BDJ Box x Covergirl for December 2014*

For December, BDJ Box partnered up with Covergirl, delivering five products to take your look from day to night. Here’s what’s inside the December 2014 BDJ Box*:

TruBlend Liquid Makeup* (Php 645) TruBlend is a full-coverage foundation that comes in a whopping 21 shades. I got a shade that seems too light for me, but it blends in well.

TruBlend Pressed Powder* (Php 425) This pressed powder is a lightweight, silky-smooth powder with shine-control. It doesn’t clog up the pores and is designed to work with the TruBlend Liquid Makeup. I got the shade “translucent light,” which I thought would be fine, but pressing it in with the sponge gave me quite a heavy coverage that was too light for my skin tone. Read More

Softly Sometimes Holiday Giveaway!

GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED. WINNER WILL BE ANNOUNCED JANUARY 1, 2015.

(Well, it’s about time.)

So, this is the first ever giveaway on Softly Sometimes. I know I promised you guys this giveaway weeks before, but I had to wait for all of the ~elements~ to kind of come together. Not that I need to disclose it or anything, but everything has been purchased by myself. I wanted to show a range of my favorite products, so I hope you all like it. 🙂
Softly Sometimes Christmas Giveaway - Prizes

What I’m Giving Away:

— Le Métier de Beauté Kaleidoscope Eye Kit in Gravité
— BITE Beauty Best Bite Remix
— Aromateria Solid Perfume in Ender
— Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Amour (deluxe size)

Le Métier de Beauté makes some of my favorite makeup products, which is why I’ve amassed quite a few items despite the hefty price tag. Gravité is a limited edition Kaleidoscope Eye Kit (fancy word for eyeshadow quad) and it’s a “spare” I had that I figured I didn’t need.

BITE Beauty is a recent discovery, and one that I’m completely enamored with. This lip set is a holiday makeup set is made up of high pigment lip pencil minis in shades that are all you really need!

Aromateria is also a recent discovery, but I hope you enjoy sniffing Ender as much as I do. (I’m pretty obsessed) And lastly, one of my favorite blush formulas: Tarte. I’ve added a pretty pink shade that’s perfect for everyday.

Mechanics:

1. There will be only one winner.
2. Contest is open internationally.
3. You must follow Softly Sometimes on Bloglovin’, WordPress or through email. I’m sorry but I can’t check if you follow through my RSS feed. 😦
4. Answer this question: What is the best thing beauty has taught you about yourself?

Ways to Enter

1. Comment on this post – be sure to use a valid email when entering the comment because that’s how I’ll reach you + keep your email private. Don’t forget to let me know how you’re subscribed to this blog (i.e. WordPress, Bloglovin’, email).
2. Instagram post – if you want to get creative, post a photo of your answer, tag me (@presidents and #softlygives) and include this link anywhere in your caption: http://bit.ly/softlygives

You can post twice (one comment and one Instagram), but make sure that your Instagram account is public so I can see the post! Doing both counts as two entries.

I’m going to go old school here and manually read and check all the entries. I wanted to do a Rafflecopter giveaway where you have to follow me on all platforms (haha), but I wanted it to be less sweepstake-y and more like those old magazine contests where you had to answer a question. I hope that’s okay. 🙂

Contest officially ends on December 25, 2014. Since I’ll be reading through the entries, I’ll announce the winner on January 1st. Please feel free to post questions or clarifications. I can’t wait to read all of your answers! 🙂

A (Late) Sephora VIB Haul

Just a small one.

I was in Korea when I placed my order, so I didn’t go too crazy because I was hoarding all I could hoard over there. The transit time to Manila is also kinda long, so this post is coming to you pretty late.

Sephora VIB Haul - 1

Simple Human Mini Sensor Mirror
This is kind of a big ticket item but I’d been hankering for a round mirror with a light for over a year now, and I asked Sarie for this for Christmas… and I guess I opened it early! It runs on a USB charge (which means no batteries) and magnifies 10x. It also folds in on itself and has a case that’s nifty for traveling. Read More

Birchbox - Vanity Affair

Picking Apart Birchbox’s Limited Edition Vanity Affair Box

‘Cause that’s how I roll.

I mainly wanted this Birchbox Vanity Affair Box ($98) because it had a Birchbox-exclusive MAKE Colour palette called Calypso that had eight eyeshadows (!) which I don’t believe has happened yet. They usually have a lip color mixed in with the shadows. Anyway, the palette itself ($40) is available on Birchbox, but I was interested in a lot of the items in the Vanity Affair box, too. After a lot of deliberation (like weeks, OK?), I gave in. I figured I could pick the box apart and give some items as gifts.

So, this post isn’t technically an unboxing, since this is an incomplete box. I set aside three items for gifts: the Maison Caulières Perfumed Bath Oil (which sounds awesome but I don’t have a tub), the Stephanie Johnson Tinseltown Jewelry Tray (which I know someone else will enjoy more), and the TOCCA Eau de Parfum Margaux (which I think my grandma will like a lot).
