Overhyped Products

Overhyped Products

Inspired by Cami Loves Kiwi’s recent video and the hype that surrounded MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade (review here), I’ve gathered together a few products that I feel like are overhyped. It’s a good mix of drugstore and higher end products.

Here is a summary, but I go more in-depth in the video:

— Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains (review): Love these, hate the stains they leave behind. Regardless of the shade, my lips turn a more orange-y color.

— L’Oreal Lucent Magique Light Touch-Up Pen: Nothing special.

— L’Oreal Shine Caresse & YSL Glossy Stain (comparative review): Generally a so-so formula. I don’t get the fuss.

— YSL Rouge Volupté Shine (review): Was originally a fan of the formula, but when I forgot to bring a tube for reapplication and my lips dried up like a shriveled prune. It’s not bad, but it’s not all that.

— Sara Happ The Lip Slip & The Lip Scrub: Great products, but too expensive.

— NARS Blush in Orgasm: I don’t think it’s flattering for all skintones, but otherwise, it is an OK blush that is excellent quality.

— MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade (review): It’s a decent highlighter, but it’s really nothing special, especially with the insane hype and mystery~ around it.

So, that’s it! What overhyped products have you tried recently? Do share!

  1. I agree! The Sara Happ lip scrub are so expensive I had to get the blood orange flavor to justify to myself that I can’t make it at home.

  2. It’s probably a good thing but I’ve been mostly happy with the makeup I’ve purchased but I tend to research to no end before I buy. I liked Orgasm but I’ve found it looks better applied over my other blushes. For some reason it doesn’t show up well on my skin unless I simply want a shimmer, so I understand what you mean about it not working with all skin tones.

    • I do research a lot, too but the problem is that a lot of blogs tend to be a bit too generous with good reviews, if you get my meaning.

Ah, I never even thought about layering Orgasm over other blushes! Thanks for the tip. 🙂

  3. Wow, probably the first blog post that didn’t rave/hop on the bandwagon for YSL lip products and orgasm. Good to read why you didn’t think they were all that.

    • Appreciate that you appreciate it! 🙂 They’re not BAD products by any means, I suppose the super hype was just… Unwarranted?

Hi there! Do you have a list of your favorite highlighters? I wanted to get the Lightscapade, but since you mentioned it’s overhyped, hindi na lang. Thanks

    • I’ve found MAC Soft & Gentle to be one of the most reliable ones. I do use it on a huge variety of skin tones because I do theatre makeup and it’s very very pretty. =) Or if you have a darker complexion, MAC Warm Soul is great. (I use it as a blush or contour colour on lighter skin.)

    • Hi Sasha, I posted my highlighter collection (lol) recently. You may want to check it out. But, I second Pam’s suggestion. I really like Benefit Watt’s Up! Maganda naman yung Lightscapade, hindi lang malaki yung pinagkaiba sa mga highlighter na meron na ako.

  5. Tom Ford lipsticks! I liked them, but I don’t think it warrants the $48 price tag! (Orrr maybe I should try the darker shades?)

    • Didn’t find them to be all that either, though I only have 1 shade. It’s a decent lipstick, if overpriced, I agree.

  6. I’d have to agree re: revlon. I have three of them and they’re not bad. I usually wait until after my initial excitement before I review something. Now I feel that they’re just ‘ok’. If the color remains the same as when you initially put it, that would’ve made them great.

      • Haha don’t worry about it! I got what you meant 🙂 they were my faves for a long time but I’m not too particular with polish to begin with! I found them too expensive, thoug.

  7. I enjoyed this post. I am with you on the Nars Orgasm, it does not look good on me and the shimmer is too much. The YSL lip stains and Loreal ones are so-so, agreed! Love the YSL RV’s though, the original formula is my favorite
    xx

    • Thank you, Taylor! I was so aghast by the shimmer, especially since I bought it when I was very much anti-shimmer, and I guess a sheep. I like it from time to time, though.

Ha, I have to tell you, I’ve learned to love the mango scent. 🙂

  8. I agree with the NARS Orgasm. I was very excited when I got it, but when I put it on, I was like – meh. That’s what everyone’s been raving about? Thanks for this post and I hope more beauty bloggers don’t over-hype products. 🙂

    • Aw, I’m sorry about that! It looks VERY good on my friend who is very, very pale. So, that’s how I concluded that it doesn’t really look the same, at its best, for all skin tones. BUT, it’s flattering to a lot. If that makes sense.

      Glad you liked the post!
