Since I posted about the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils yesterday, I thought about posting some of my favorite matte products.
LIPS
Clockwise from the top: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita, NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Montego Bay, MAC Lipstick in Mehr, Revlon Matte Lipstick in Fabulous Fig, MAC Matte Lipstick in Russian Red, and Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in La Favorite.
Here they are, swatched in the same order.
EYESHADOW
An obvious recommendation for a matte palette is the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette, which consists of five matte shades, out of the palette’s six. It’s a great companion to all the eyeshadows you have right now, and you can definitely use it by itself.
Here are a few of my other favorite matte eyeshadows, from a variety of eyeshadow palettes:
L-R: Urban Decay Naked Palette (Buck), Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette (Tease), Laura Mercier Artist’s Palette for Eyes (Plum Smoke, Café Au Lait, Coffee Ground)
L-R: Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette (Blackout), Laura Mercier Artist’s Palette for Eyes (Deep Night), theBalm Nude ‘Tude Palette (Sexy), Guerlain Turandot, MAC Quarry, MAC Handwritten
For non-powder eyeshadows, I have a L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Sultry Smoke and a Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough As Taupe
They swatch pretty heavily, but they don’t look as similar as they do here in real life and in use.
BLUSH
For blush, I have a couple, though the first two actually have a slight sheen to them, especially the first one.
L-R: Chanel Joues Contraste in Frivole, Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Exposed, Illamasqua Blusher Duo in Lover (apricot)/Hussy (pink)
FACE STUFF
Powders & Bronzers and things like that.
L-R: Snoe Beauty Poudre Phenomenon, bareMinerals Mineral Veil, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light, Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte & Waterproof Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess
These are setting powders, finishing powders, and bronzers that have little to no sheen in them. They’re great for keeping oil at bay and for controlling excessive luminosity, if you know what I mean.
Why does “matte matter,” you ask? Well, it just seems to always be that one little thing that your look usually needs to pull it together. Matte adds a variety of texture and the appearance of a more natural shadow, since it doesn’t really reflect much light and behaves as a shadow actually would.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this post. Any favorite mattes in your stash? Let me know in the comments below. 🙂

Great post! Matte is my favorite and i get super excited about mattes
Blushwise, am currently la-la-loving Cargo blushes in Cannes, Tenerife, and Tonga; the Balm’s Fratboy; and NYX Cinnamon powder blush. I really enjoy layering matte blushes over cream blushes for better wear and depth. The new cream cheek duo by e.l.f. is really really pretty too – although its not technically matte matte it has no shimmer and looks very natural. Nars irresistiblement is nice used as a blush even though its really a supposed to be a bronzer. I really want to check out Nars Gina and Mata Hari! Been super into Ben Nye Banana Powder too.
Lately, I’ve been using MAC eyeshadow in Copperplate and Soft Brown a lot, as well as Sleek’s ultra mattes V.2/au natural palettes and Stila’s in the know palette. Would you say that the Naked Basics is indispensable? :] ive been thinking of getting it, but i’m worried it might be redundant.
Wet n Wild, NYX, and Milani make wonderful matte lipsticks that stay on forever and don’t feather. Revlon’s matte l/s in cocoa craving is great too for those days that you want color without overdoing it. And of course, Nars’ velvet mattes (and mattes and semi-mattes in general) are aaawesome. OCC’s pretty boy is my favorite fuchsia at the moment!
I also really want to check out the MUFE aqua rouges (without the gloss) and the new YSL mattes 🙂 How is the wear and lasting-power of the Chanel rouge velvet line?
Thanks for sharing, S! 🙂 I don’t think the Naked Basics is indispensable if you already have a bunch of matte neutrals or if you already have a go to palette. For a first palette, It’s great though and has everything you could ever need.
Lasting power of the rouge allure velvet is pretty good. The rouge coco shine has the worst longevity!
Love this post! I generally go for matte finishes because I think it’s the easiest look to pull off. My fave matte lipstick from MAC is Please Me. It’s a warm wearable pink that’s good for daily use. Wet N Wild also has a lot of good matte lipsticks.
For eyeshadows, UD Buck and Naked are my go- to colors.
Thanks, Shev. 🙂 I agree, they are quite easy to pull off. A bit tricky to find a matte with a good formula, though.
Fantastic post, I use my Naked Basics palette every day!
Thank you! It’s a great little palette, for sure!
I love mattes, too – especially matte lipstick 🙂 It’s harder for me to find matte eyeshadows that I like, but once I do, they usually become fast favorites in my rotation!
Thank you Larie, I agree! Some matte eyeshadows are just so darned hard to blend!
Great post ….I’m a fan of matte eyeshadows !!! I got a Bh cosmetics matte palette since its difficult to find good collection of matte eyeshadows !
Thanks! I bet you have a great selection of mattes now. 🙂
