Open Season: Mascaras in Rotation

Hello, everyone. I hope you’re doing well.

While the typhoon, Haiyan/Yolanda, has been on its way out of the Philippines, it has left devastation in its wake. If you feel like you want to help out affected families and regions, click here for the post I made earlier. I’ll be making it a sticky post for about a week or so, for easy access. Buttons for donations to various organizations are on my sidebar as well.

Eula, Shari, Eliza, Julia, and Liz also have posts on how to help. Bea has a nice post on the iffiness of blogging during these times, which is helpful to read before passing judgment on others.

I hope you don’t think it callous of me to be posting during this tragedy. Most of these posts are pre-planned/pre-written, so I am not writing them on the spot. I have been doing all I can, as of now, to help out.

Anyway, thank you for reading this little announcement. Every little bit helps, and we need all the help we can get.

I’ve always been someone who has two, maybe three, mascaras open at a time. And then I stopped being that person. Yikes. In any case, these mascaras are presented in the (wrong) order in which they have been opened. The LMdB mascara should have been placed before The Rocket. Nevertheless, I’ll give my brief thoughts on each.

Mascaras

L-R: Majolica Majorca Lash King, Eye of Horus Natural Mascara, Maybelline The HyperCurl, FairyDrops Volume Burst, Maybelline The Rocket, Le Métier de Beauté Anamorphic Lash, Benefit They’re Real!

Majolica Majorca Lash King — One of my earliest mascara exploits (my mama gave it to me since it was on a buy 1 get 1 deal), Lash King is a fiber-wig mascara, which means that it has a ton of little fibers (or hair) in the formula that is meant to lengthen your lashes. It is one of my favorites since it gives great definition and length without separating the lashes too much, which I find happens more often with another Majolica Majorca mascara, Lash Expander.

MajoMajo - Lash King

Eye of Horus Natural Mascara* — I quite like this one, even with its weird hourglass brush, though I have to note that I do not like how it looks on curled lashes. Or, more accurately, I prefer it on uncurled lashes. It definitely lives up to its name—use this for a more natural, “just defined” look!

Eye of Horus

Maybelline The HyperCurl* — AHHH. Love at first swipe. This is an excellent mascara for holding a curl, and I use it a lot for layering with other mascaras, although it does really well on its own, too.

FairyDrops Volume Burst mascara (film type) — I was super excited for this mascara and waited months before I opened it (as per my 2-3 tubes rule), but was let down. It does its job, but there is a fine line between AWESOME VOLUMINOUS LASHES! and GOOPY SPIDER LEGS with this one. I do like it a lot—especially at the removal stage—I just have to get the hang of it.

FairyDrops - Volume Burst

Le Métier de Beauté Anamorphic Lash Mascara — I got this sample from a GWP that Sarie managed to get for me. This is a great, natural mascara similar to Eye of Horus, though I love this a bit more. This is perfect for a no makeup makeup look because it gives your lashes natural definition that makes it look like you’re wearing nothing on your lashes, but still giving it that extra oomph.

LMdB - ALM

Maybelline The Rocket* — I got this in a subscription box and it was calling my name… so I opened it. And it was, again, love at first swipe. This gave my lashes beautiful volume and held its curl—a problem it has with heavier mascaras like Fairy Drops.

The Rocket

Benefit They’re Real! — Again, I got it as a Sephora GWP. I’ve been meaning to try this a lot and initially, it didn’t impress me as I was still swooning over The Rocket at the time. When I reached for this when I came back home from vacation, though… that’s another story. This is a beautiful mascara, and I can see why it gets the hype that it does.

Benefit They're Real

My recent exploits have yielded mostly favorable results. I don’t think there’s a particular dud in this bunch, although I do have to say that I don’t really have great expectations when it comes to mascara because my lashes are short + don’t stay curled. Still, these mascaras delivered in different ways, so I’m pretty happy about all of them.

Taking into account animal testing status and effectivity, I would re/purchase Fairy Drops and Le Métier de Beauté. I’m still looking to fill in the gap of both Maybelline mascaras… I love them, but they are not cruelty-free, so I am trying not to repurchase them. I have two pending mascaras, so let’s see what I find. For now, I’m off to finish these off!

Because, because, because, because, because…

  1. Wow people shouldn’t really judge bloggers just because they post about non-Yolanda related things. For all they know, the bloggers may have already donated tons of money or have already done their part.

On to mascaras! I’ve never tried using mascara on uncurled lashes. Must try it soon!

    • I think, for some of the commenters, the tragedy hits close to home. I’m personally a bit more invested since a lot of the families of our house help live in areas in both Samar and Leyte and they’ve had close to zero news from their loved ones since Yolanda struck. It’s really sad to see them so helpless and being helpless yourself to help them out. I’ve been doing what I can, but it still feels like it’s not enough. You’re right. A lot of the time, people don’t publicize their contributions and they shouldn’t. I hope the tide turns for these people, though.

I do that just for natural definition. It’s great for some mascaras, kinda useless for some. If you have lashes that tend to droop, I don’t know if it work well for you. Good luck!

  2. I’ve been wanting to try the fairy drops film type since i love tubing mascaras and i really like their waterproof volume formula (the purple tube)!

you’re right though – its does take some getting used to. my favorite tubing mascara at the moment is the l’oreal collagene curl one (the gold tube). to get good application, and not “spider” lashes as you call them, i find it really helps to lightly swipe some of the product off on a tissue before applying, and then applying the layers very quickly before the product dries. unlike with non-tubing/film type mascaras where its nice to let each coat dry between application. otherwise i do end up with spider lashes too. it may the nature of the tubing/film formula that once it dries is very hard to get additional of mascara on in a natural looking way. you might want to try wiggling the brush heavy at the root and then just pulling quickly up the lashes several times for feathery tips. normally i find that i have to be super quick about it with less mascara on the wand. hope that might help you 🙂

    • Thanks! Maybe I’ll try that next. 🙂

I usually wipe the wand on the rim of the tube because I don’t like wasting product on tissue, but thank you for the info. 😀

  3. Fwoar! Please remind me of the eyeshadows you are using in the Maybelline Rocket video, because that eye look is amazing. And the mascara is very dramatic!

It took awhile for Fairy Drops to grow on me; when I first tried it I didn’t like it at all But apparently it gets better as it ages, and there’s a sweet little window where it’s just the right amount of gloopy before it dries out too much.

They’re Real is probably my favorite mascara currently. The percentages they have on the packaging make my eyes roll (obviously 99% of women thought their lashes looked longer – they’re wearing freaking mascara) but the results do not lie. And it removes like a dream.

    • Le Métier de Beauté! 🙂 These shadows are from the Melange palette, but that was LE. I’d say their singles/eyeshadows in general are comparable.

;_; why can’t they just be perf out of da tube?!

I wonder who the 1% was! Haha they must have worse lashes than I do. I poked myself in the eye with the wand, though. It was excruciating.

  4. I’ve always been a fan of Maybelline mascaras. They last all day and I get great comments for my “malandi” eyelashes. Haha! I’m currently on my 2nd tube of the Hypercurl. It’s so affordable for something that works. 🙂

  5. The first photo — WAW, you look even more frikkin gorgeous with pink lips! MOAR MOAR ROAR! And I think I’ll finally give in to the Fairydrops mascara. Till now, I havent found a formula I am willing to wear all day, errday. As in, I find it a hassle to wear mascara because it either smudges or transfers in just a few hours.

And regarding posting about Yolanda, I don’t think it should be an issue. I find it so unbelievable that people still find ways to be negative despite the devastating event. Pag hindi ka magpost, insensitive ka. Pag magpost ka naman, nakiki-sawsaw ka. I’m really bothered with that. I’m not even bothered if people don’t post about it and go on with their lives (but there IS a borderline between being discreet and just downright indifferent) What irks me are those mindless rants and negative reactions to those who decide to post/react/spread the news and those who do otherwise. Hay.

    • Ay, thank you! Hahaha this is one of the only pinks I like. 😀 And it’s annoying that it is LE D: I like the LMdB one talaga for that, it’s super easy to apply, clean, and it never smudges. It’s a bit on the pricier side lang nga so I don’t know how often I will repurchase it. Maybelline mascaras are some of the best talaga!

I agree with you. Grabe no? Kung makapanghusga yung iba… Wala namang may alam sa mga naitulong diba? Hay nako, may isang post kahapon sa feed ko na nakakabother talaga, so I know what you mean. The line between OK & indifferent is very thin, so for me parang I choose not to post about “normal” stuff right now as much as possible, para wala nalang risk of appearing callous. Ewan. At the end of the day, I feel like I just shouldn’t care nalang rin what other people may think of me if I post about so and so. Di naman nila alam ginagawa ko eh, so bahala na sila manghusga. Iba pang issue yang rant rant na yan. Nakakainis, e di wag mong basahin.
