Recreating a Rijks Muse Palette

I posted about a hypothetical makeup line about a year ago called Rijks Muse, which was a winning entry for a contest that the Rijksmuseum held that asked for some potential products and merch using images from their permanent collection. As of my posting last year, there were talks of possibly developing an actual line, but fast forward to today and there is no Rijks Muse in sight! So I took it into my own hands and “made” my own palette.

Swatched, L-R: Rouge Bunny Rouge Long-Lasting Eyeshadow (Bejewelled Skylark), Addiction (Sand Dune), MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow (Thunder & Rain, grey only), Le Métier de Beauté Beauty Vault VIP single, Addiction (Safari Mode), Addiction (Truffle)

I personally think that it’s pretty similar to this hypothetical palette inspired by Jan Adam Kruseman’s “Portrait Of Alida Christina Assink,” except for the light silver/grey I picked out for fourth shade turned out to be a bit more of a greige-y shade. I think the real question is: Would this palette work?

Look 1

RijksLook1-Face1
Shades used: Rouge Bunny Rouge Bejewelled Skylark deliciously over the lid (!), Addiction Sand Dune as a blending/transition shade, Addiction Truffle in the outer corner and inner corner of eyes, as well as on the lower lash line.

Other Products Used: NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (Ginger), K-Palette Real Lasting 2Way Eyebrow Pencil (103)*, MAC Paint Pot (Painterly), MAC Eye Kohl (Teddy), Jordana Best Lash Extreme MAscara, NYX Blush (Taupe), Le Métier de Beauté Blushing Bronzed Duet (Romeo & Juliet), Le Métier de Beauté Lip Pencil (Nudité), Le Métier de Beauté Lip Crème (March VIP)

LOL, my lips look freaking huge here. Perhaps why I don’t wear glosses so much? Perhaps.

Look 2

RijksLook2-Face1
Shades used: Addiction Safari Mode on outer 2/3 of the lid, LMdB VIP on inner corner, Addiction Truffle through the crease

RijksLook2-Face2
Other Products Used: NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (Ginger), Nature Republic By Flower Auto Eyebrow (2), MAC Paint Pot (Painterly), Too Cool for School Dinoplatz Eye Krrrayon Stick (Moss on Rocks), NYX Blush (Taupe), Dolly Wink Liquid Liner, Le Métier de Beauté Eye Brightening & Setting Powder (Refresh), & Other Stories Blush (Canvas Taupe), Sigma Lip Vex (Tint)**

Ugh I love this eye gradient. If I do say so myself. That’s a great trick to get a pretty nice gradient: lay down a darker cream base on the deepest part of your gradient, and pat your main lid color—in this case, it was Addiction’s Safari Mode over TCFS Moss on Rocks, and blend!

Look 3

RijksLook3-Face1
Shades used: Grey side of MAC Thunder & Rain on outer 2/3 of lid, Addiction Sand Dune on inner 1/3 + inner corner of upper & lower lid + crease, Addiction Truffle on outer 1/3 of crease + outer 2/3 of lower lash line

Here’s a closer look at the eye look:

Other Products Used: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind (Medium; I don’t really like this product, I’m just using it up!), Illamasqua Cream Foundation (CF 320, used as contour), Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder (Mood Light, Dim Light), MAC High-Light Powder (Crew), Nature Republic Botanical Eye Primer, Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil (Crave), Rimmel ScandalEyes Eye Kohl (Nude), Nature Republic By Flower Auto Eyebrow (2), Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara, ILIA Lipstick (Funnel of Love)

I really struggled with the MAC Thunder & Rain/grey shade, but it was interesting to see it paired with so many warm shades. I think it worked out!

Well, that was fun! This is what happens when I feel a little shopping-crazed. I really should be doing more meaningful things with my time, lol. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this post regardless. I think creating fake palettes with what you already have is a great way to get out of your makeup funk/self-induced retail sadness.

Oh, and an update on my makeup-buying: I have 3-ish things in my Sephora cart for the VIB sale. I’m very, very tempted to bump up my 12-item limit for the year to 18 (1.5 products/month), but we’ll see. Damn you, beautiful new Hourglass bronzers and NARS blushes!

  1. I LOVE that last look, it’s somewhere between rainbowy oil slick and healing bruise. Colorful but subtle and tasteful.

    • Thank you, Valentine! 🙂 That means a lot as it’s the look I’m most unsure about, haha. Thanks for reading! x

  2. Ahhh that palette, I STILL haven’t forgotten about it, Carina! I’ve been bothering the museum press office once in awhile for updates, wala pa talaga e! Sighh Don’t worry, once it comes out (if ever it comes out hehe) I will bring one home for you. 🙂
