My Personal (Predictable) Lip Picks Lately

I’ve been taking a break from many things recently, and it seems that includes fun lip colors. I’m trying to get back in the mood for my corals, purples, what have you, but I figured I’d show you what I’ve usually been reaching for lately (save for the vamps, which I occasionally reach for but never as a fail-safe option). I know they all look like the same damn thing, and as a dutiful beauty nut, I’m taking it upon myself to tell you that they’re different! Ahem.

PredictableLipPicks - Swatches

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bahama — I love this shade! Except I realized recently that it has a bunch of v. fine shimmer that gets more and more obvious the more you load it on. So, um. Don’t. Anyway, I love this; it’s a bit of a 90s lip, IMO.

NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Tonkin — I know this as Bea’s favorite NPML (or ever?) shade. It’s very neutral, a sorta pinky-brown that’s pretty perfect for everyday use.

MAC Lustre Lipstick in Jubilee — I like using this if I’m feeling more of a juicy lip than a matte finish. It’s a warm nude on the darker side of the spectrum, def. a good nude for medium skintones and maybe a touch darker than a nude (but still a fairly neutral) lip for fair-light skintones.

ILIA Beauty Lipstick in Funnel of Love — This is a pretty bright nude option, with a very slight neon lean. It’s a satin finish and brightens up my complexion. I love using this when I wear fairly heavy eye makeup.

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Julie — This looks like a cousin of Funnel of Love, but a touch pink-peachier, slightly more obvious.

Here are a few photos of me wearing some of the shades, so you can see what I mean!

ILIA Funnel of Love
ILIA Funnel of Love, I THINK, but it also kinda looks like MAC Jubilee in this photo. Which was posted a long time ago. Like, 2 months ago probably?

Anyway, those are my go-tos as of… well, as of the last time I was around here. Do you have any go-to lip colors when you’re too lazy to think? Mine never seem to be the bright ones. x

  1. Ooooh, I love your hair in the photo where you have Julie on!

My go-to used to be the Revlop lip butter in Pink Truffle, but now it’s the Revlon Lacquer Balm in Ingenuuue. Like you, I never reach for brights by default.

    • Thank you! I always wanted to try Pink Truffle, but I remember it had shimmers or something that kind of dissuaded me, somewhat. It’s so weird, but I think I like playing with my eye makeup more 🙂

  2. Predictable but classy! I love these shades. My personal go-to’s are MAC’s Taupe and Topshop’s Mink.

  3. My no-brainer go to is also some kind of neutral lippie, preferably with a semi-matte finish, since glossy lips tend to draw more attention. I recently picked up a few Colourpop Sheer Lippiestix and just keep on alternating between 4 shades.

Lovely neutrals! I can’t seem to find any that fit my complexion. Most of them are too blue-pink. (-_-) I’ve been eyeing the NARS in Julie – the color is just so gorgeous, UGH – and will remind myself to try the Tonkin at some point.

    • That’s so weird, but Tonkin is a really good neutral, I think! Montego Bay, which was what used to be my favorite Pure Matte shade is blue-pink. Tonkin is a really good solid medium nude. In my opinion, haha. Let me know if you managed to try it out and how it worked out for you! x

  5. Is this mood contagious? I’ve been going for “predictable” colors for a couple of months now or so. Top picks are NARS Niagara, Happy Skin Too Cool (the Preview one) and L’Oreal Crayon Sunset. Lemming over Tonkin, Funnel of Love and Julie!!!
