Made-Up History: Jean-Michel Basquiat’s “Cassius Clay,” 1982

In this edition of Made-Up History, I’ll be talking about someone who is very dear to my heart. Jean-Michel Basquiat is my favorite artist. It’s really hard to pick one, but if I had to, it would be Basquiat. He started out as a street artist and he would tag his work (then, a collaborative venture with friend Al Diaz) with “SAMO,” which is a hypocoristic name for “Same Old Shit.” The Village Voice published a piece on some of their works. He graduated from street art and graffiti by 1979 and by 1980, he started showing some pieces in group shows. In 1981, a piece by Rene Ricard called “The Radiant Child” was published in Artforum Magazine, which brought him to the attention of the art scene. His works were provocative, a commentary on consumerism, popular culture, and cultural politics, and his style was a new take on primitivism. Instagram FOTD Rewind: Vol. 1

So, I’ve been thinking about the stuff I post here and wow, it’s mostly product reviews and swatches… which I feel probably gets kind of repetitive and boring after a while. The thing is, those are the easiest to write because you kind of have a mental checklist of things you should mention, and you’re pretty much done! (Which isn’t to say that those are easy to do, but just in the grand scheme of things I could write, they’re not that bad.) Anyway. I always have plans to write more innersting~ posts, but I guess I’d like to try posting more about looks, too. The reasons behind this are a) I can show you how I use the makeup I buy, past the hauling and swatching, and b) I can keep a record of my favorite and not-so-favorite looks, for my own reference. Made-Up History: Les Demoiselles d’Avignon by Pablo Picasso

This look was borne out of a need to update this little section of my blog, Made-Up History, and also out of the fear of wearing blue eyeshadow. I never understood it, never knew why people wore it out of campaigns or editorials. When I heard that blues suited brown eyes, I was dubious. Still, curiosity got the better of me and thought this was a good time to do it. This is also partially inspired by both Mariana (whose personal makeup challenge was to wear a red lip in the day time) and Liz (who brought up the question that instigated Mariana’s experiment). Today, we’re going to look at Pablo Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon or “The Young Ladies of Avignon,” created in 1907 and is part of MoMA’s collection. (Source) Wikipedia says that it was originally called The Brothel of Avignon, which I can sort of see with the provocative poses of the figures. Playlist: Lena Dunham in i-D Magazine

I’ve had this post in my drafts since November 29 (!) but I only managed to try it out today. I tried recreating the look on Lena Dunham for her i-D magazine cover, but I don’t think I was all that successful. In any case, here’s my interpretation, along with uneven eyeliner and a “dead in the eyes” look: For foundation, I used Benefit’s Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow in Cheers to Me Champagne. All my foundations are quite yellow, except for my shu uemura UV base, which in turn is kind of cakey on me. Did not set with powder as I won’t be wearing this look out anyway, but I would have used bareMinerals Mineral Veil. For eyes, I used Laura Mercier Artist’s Palette for Eyes: Vanilla Nuts on the browbone, Café Au Lait on the entire lid, with Coffee Ground on the crease and outer corner. I softly defined the upper and lower lashline with Rich Coffee, using a pointed eyeshadow brush (a revelation that I will talk about in another post). I …

In a (tiny) fit of desperation for new non-haul, non-review content, I asked Sarie what I should do (I was going to film a tutorial for a particular look I had posted on Instagram a few days ago), and she said I should do this! It’s a pretty simple look and as it’s past midnight ’round these parts, I skipped the foundation and other face base types. Pardon the redness and spots! This is what I came up with. It’s pretty simple! I knew right away that I would wear my Guerlain Rouge G L’Extrait in Orgueil. I’m not kidding about right away. Since this beautiful, deep lip color is so intense, I decided to keep the rest of my face simple. Also, my skills are limited to this~ anyway. Here’s how I did my eyes! All over the lid, I put on Guava as my lid wash. On the outer third, I patted on Chocolate. I deepened my crease with Coffee Ground and for browbone highlight, I used Vanilla Nuts! Before the year ended, Pantone announced the color for the coming new year, 2013: Emerald Green! I decided to make an eye look based on this serpentine selection. You should know that I am still pretty reserved when it comes to playing with colors, so this will be a lot more subdued than the actual color. Plus, I don’t own a true emerald shade (yet) so the eye look will be a concoction of greens I have lying around, which lean more towards olive. The emerald is May’s birthsone and the mystery and history that surrounds it is mysterious and alluring. Cleopatra was known to drape herself with emeralds.Though rubies are the most obvious choice for symbolizing passionate love, emeralds offers a complexity of emotions and meanings that are perfect for a long and steadfast relationship. “Another reason that the emerald has come to symbolize a more mature love can be traced to Hindu culture.
