Tales from the top shelf: skin care update

Hello, friends. Today, we talk about skin care. Contrary to how I titled this post, I don’t actually reach for the top shelf when it comes to skin care (off to a great start, aren’t I?) — if it works, it works. I do enjoy trying new things, though I’ve scaled back the trying a lot. These are the skin care things currently in my rotation, in case you want to try new things, too. A caveat: I don’t currently have the best skin situation, though I can say that these have more or less taken care of my skin, under the stress of moving and changing temperatures, among other things. (I’m moving in a few weeks, and I thought it would be nice (lol) to say ‘hi’ from my current student halls bathroom. I have an ensuite — hallelujah.) On my very tiny shelf, I’ve got: micellar water and a face wash from the drugstore — nothing to write home about; they get the job done! I also have a face scrub in the …

Takashi Murakami's 727

Made-Up History: Takashi Murakami’s 727, 1996

A quick look based on Takashi Murakami’s 727, which features DOB as the main character of the piece. I’ve been intending to do this look for a while, but just never got around to it. Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist who’s known for blurring the lines between “high” and “low” art, that is, fine and commercial art. He has exhibited in international venues (I saw this piece in a retrospective/special exhibit by the Brooklyn Museum many, many years ago) and is involved with many commercial projects such as special edition Louis Vuittons.

Lazy Girl Makeup: One Shadow Shadows

Slicking on one eyeshadow on your lid isn’t an entirely new concept for the lazy girl. In fact, before you (we) went off the deep end of the makeup world, that’s what you (we) probably did. So, I’m here to show you some of my favorite singles to put all over my lid when I’m feeling particularly rushed or stumped. Before I begin, here is Liz’s take and here is Bea’s. Here are just a few… by which I mean, most eyeshadows will work for this purpose anyway. I love the type of shades that actually have dimension, though, and these ones are quite effortless to wear. Swatched, L-R: MAC Groundwork, MAC Constructivist, Oslo Vela, shu uemura ME medium brown 885, Rouge Bunny Rouge Abyssinian Catbird, Le Métier de Beauté Alexandrite, & Other Stories Percaline Khaki, Addiction by Ayako Fudge MAC Groundwork – my favorite colored eyeshadow base that, fortuitously, can be worn alone, too. It’s definitely a go-to eye color, both as a base and as a shade itself. MAC Constructivist – darker than …

FOTD: #YSProm

I’ve been extremely busy lately and my queue of posts ran out before I could write more posts (heh), so I hope you guys don’t mind a Face of the Day! I wore this to #YSProm, which is basically Young Star’s 18th Birthday! You can see (a bit) more pictures here. It looks simple—and it is!—but I did spend quite a bit of time making my base look nice~ I was so happy that I didn’t have to put SPF on my face because it was a night event. Thank tha lawddd. I only put up with SPF because I don’t want to burn under the sun. What I Wore: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (Ginger), bareMinerals Original Foundation (Medium Beige), BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector (Opal), Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder (Mood Light), & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil (Bouclé Greige), The Body Shop Brow & Liner Kit (02), MAC Paint Pot (Painterly), NARS And God Created the Woman Palette, Sasa Perfect Shape Gel Eyeliner (01 Velvet Black), Happy Skin Eye Am Here to …

Recent Loves

I feel like it’s a bit too late to talk about “monthly favorites,” but I always have little products I want to talk a bit about. Here are the things I’ve been loving lately. Not exactly for an entire month, but just the ones I’ve been reaching for a lot these days. For my eyeshadow fave as of late, I’ve got a palette by NARS that I’m sure you are all familiar with, And God Created the Woman. This is such a great little palette. Recently, I’ve used this for eyebrows, eyeshadow and liner all at once. Other makeup favorites: I got the & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil in Bouclé Greige from Laala and I’ve been using it a lot. I posted about my brow routine not long ago, and I sometimes have been using this in place of the K-Palette eyebrow marker. Another frequent easy lipstick I’ve been using a lot of lately is the THREE Velvet Lust Lipstick in 05 Love Like Heaven. The NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Ginger is steadily becoming …

& Other Stories loot and reviews from my swap with Laala

My body is all a-tingle! Several months ago, I stumbled upon a new brand under H&M called & Other Stories, which had its own cosmetics line. That was so well-designed that I MUST HAVE THEM. Sadly, they are not available in the US, which is a country from which I can order from pretty easily, so I shoved all most of my desire for it deep down my throat and looked at the other pretties. I posted about a swap with Laala, and this is actually where it all began. In her letter, she mentioned that a lot of stuff was gone by the time she got to the counters (since it was the holiday season), but I think she got me a bunch of great stuff, actually, all of which I will attempt to give a fair review in a single post. For reasons.

Covet: & Other Stories

So, this shop called & Other Stories have been making rounds on the European beauty blogging community, and I of course have to check out anything with an ampersand in the name. Holy hell do I feel bad now. & Other Stories is basically a new brand under Sweden’s H&M. I haven’t perused the site that much yet, but the beauty section has definitely caught my eye. The reason why I feel bad is because they do not ship to the Philippines. Or the US, which is where I usually use third-party shipping services. So this is a genuine lemming-only sort of shopping. Which is depressing because I just want all the things. Here are my top picks, because I like to torture myself. Blusher in Cire Red (left) and Stockinette Nude (right), £10 each Matte Eye Colour in Cubica Mauve, £7 and Satin Eye Color in Organza Coral, £7 Creamy Pearl Eye Colour in Sarsanet Petrol, £7 and Eye Colour Palette in Sateen Aubergine, £12 Total Tint Stick in Pink, £10 and Face Contour …
