So, I managed to get a Glamourbox subscription for March 2013. It’s one of those things that gets sold out so quickly that you need to get on board for the next time they roll out products. And it’s weird, because you don’t even know what you’re going to get, since subscription boxes—at least the meh ones—tend to be inconsistent.
Anyway, that’s how marketing works, I guess. Included in this month’s box are, roughly, the ff. items:
- Eye of Horus Eyeliner, which I liked a lot
- Pevonia sample
- Heynature BB Cream sachets (4)
- Heynature Brightening Gel sachet (1)
- YSL Saharienne perfume sample
- Ralph Lauren Big Pony 3 perfume sample
- Avon Skin So Soft Hand and Body Lotion, mini bottle (2)
In case you didn’t know, Glamourbox costs Php 595 a month. Theoretically, this is a great deal because you get a box sort of tailored for you, as the kind of person who signs up for surprise boxes. Some of the items are full-sized and cost much more than the subscription fee, but it’s often sent to you with a bunch of “filler” items, too. Krysty wrote about Glamourbox and BDJ Box, and why we shouldn’t really expect much from subscription boxes in the first place.
But she makes a good point when she says that they should at least include stuff we’ve heard about. I mean, the sachets turned me off because you will have no clue if you like a product enough to buy it, after a single use. And then it’s even from a brand that hasn’t been making any rounds at all (that I know of, anyway). It’s just a bit disappointing, because excitement is built up for you and you get a lot of meh products.
No one expects a frillion full-sized items, but I do think people expect better selections. I know it can be hard—like shopping for hundreds of people and expecting to please every one of them by giving out the same bunch of items as gifts. You can’t expect everyone to be happy, but I don’t know. I know some people like being introduced to newer brands, so that’s another factor as well. It was a really underwhelming for me, especially after all the praises I’ve heard sung about this particular subscription box.
(I think the items didn’t fit the theme either; which was weird, because why have a theme in the first place? But that’s another story.)
Do I like this box? It’s alright. I don’t hate it. I like three products out of the lot, and I ended up giving one of the perfume samples to my sister and some of the items to other people. I don’t know if I’ll renew my Glamourbox subscription, but in case I run out of slots the next time around, it truly wouldn’t be the end of the world for me.
They gave you Avon lotion? I find that pretty hilarious, honestly. I mean, Avon sells some decent products, but over all, it’s basically a budge brand. I don’t know if it’s common there, but here isn’t one of those things house wives sell as like a little side business. So idk.
But anyway, it was nice to hear your voice 🙂 (and all those birds, omg)
Also, this makes me so excited because I signed up for a nerdy surprise box thing called Loot Crate and I should have it in a few days. I didn’t realize these subscription surprise boxes were becoming so popular.
Yup, that’s exactly what it is. I used to buy a lot of Avon (or ask my mom to, when she helps out people she knows who sells Avon on the side), but yeah, that was a disappointment for me. 😦
Yes! 😀 Is it close to spring where you are (Michigan, yes?)?
Oooh, what’s that? What do you typically get? One of my favorite ones is called Quarterly 🙂 You can subscribe to a number of people (like authors and people like Pharell) and they put together mailings for you! 🙂
I canceled my BDJ subscription yesterday because I thought about your suggestion re pooling the money. I will use the money to build my Kate Spade fund instead haha 🙂
Awesome! Glad to have helped. 🙂 I think that’s ultimately a smarter choice, if you are already thinking of building a collection or have a big buy in mind.
Hi Carina, what are your thoughts about urban decay’s naked basics? I’m new to wearing make up, so i’m on the look out for products that are worth buying. Your review with Tarte’s amazonian clay blushes convinced me to buy their exposed shade 🙂
Hi Jamie, I’m still working on a review. 🙂 Have you been liking the Tarte blush? I hope so!
