It finally happened.
The rubbery texture of one of my NARS compacts has finally melted off. I was waiting for it, and one of them started to succumb to this unholy heat. Granted, it was my first ever NARS purchase, and I wish I could say that it was something other than the ubiquitous Orgasm, but it wasn’t. I am so very beige sometimes.
Anyway, I tried to get rid of the sticky, but it wouldn’t budge. So I just wrapped it around in sticky tape. If you’re not familiar with washi tape (how???), it’s basically printed masking tape that originated from Japan (of course). People use it for everything—they even developed larger tapes to cover larger surfaces, much like wallpaper and temporary paint.
Basically, I just wrapped most of the exposed sticky surface in a variety of tapes and called it creativity.
I think it turned out pretty nice. Pretty summery, which makes me feel like I have created a limited edition packaging for summer days, kind of. I think it’s pretty cute. 🙂

That is awesome! I don’t have enough NARS nor are they old enough, but I’ll keep this in mind when the time comes. (I do feel like it’s inevitable – there have been grumblings about the NARS packaging for years.)
Thanks, Liz! I didn’t think it would happen to me (like an idiot), so I wasn’t so diligent with cleaning this one before it went yuck. I’ve read that makeup remover works for cleaning this!
Hah! Love the DIY limited edition packaging 😀
Thanks a lot! 🙂
I think it looks super cute!
And for the record, rubbing alcohol tends to de-sticky things pretty well. You just have to, well, rub a bit. 😉
I think it reacts weirdly to NARS packaging and ends up taking off the rubbery part, too! Which, I realize, I could have done instead. Lol.
HUH!! I thought it WAS a limited edition!
I second the rubbing alcohol, worked for me to remove that rubbery overlay on plastic things that went sticky over time.
Oh wow, thanks! Haha I am over the mooooon. Ah, that could have worked! I was so distraught about the ICKY STICKY rubber packaging, I didn’t think to scratch it off instead, lol.
So sorry to hear it melted off!!! I love how you solved the problem though 🙂 Now it looks so futuristic!
Thank ya! I love washi tape 😀
That is adorable!!!!
Thank you!
The “new” packaging is better though. Lol
HA! Thanks 😀
That looks amazing! Can I hire you to come repackage my makeup??
Right on board! Thanks 🙂
That’s such a good idea! Saves me from the effort of depotting.
Glad you think so!
This is a super cute idea! I love NARS, but the packaging kills me. When mine got sticky, I depotted my blushes (and nearly cracked one, I almost had a heart attack).
I would have freaked out. :0 I loooove the look of NARS packaging but then it gets crap, lol.
Looks like limited edition packaging. I love how the NARS logo still shows through the washi tape. 🙂
Thanks a lot! I liked that bit, too. Yay for washi. 🙂

Reminds me that that time I made a case for some loose eyeshadow tins out of wrapping paper, washi tape, a bit of glue and a crayon conté box (#artlife).
Woot woot!
