This tip is so simple that I almost feel like a criminal for even sparing one whole post for it. I think the picture even says it all. Basically, like every other beauty nut, I tend to have more than one mascara tube open at a time. As such, it’s hard for me to keep track of their “expiration dates.” Most mascaras expire 3 to 6 months after the tube is first opened, and while some tubes helpfully state what particular time frame the mascaras should be kept, I doubt that we all remember when we first opened that delicious tube.
Writing down the date when you first opened the mascara can help with hygiene. The washi tape just helps with cuteness. As we can see here, October 2013 was a great month for mascara sampling for me. Sometimes, you can go with smelling the mascara (Too funky? Too bad to use!) but I think this is a more accurate way to do things.
Here is the why: Mascara is one of the beauty products notorious for going bad really easily. You need to replace them quickly because bacteria breeds inside the tube and close, constant contact with your eye exacerbates this (moisture is the essence of wetness, and so on).

I’m bad in that sense – I don’t usually throw my mascara until it starts smelling or looking funky. Nothing really bad happened yet, but I shouldn’t wait for a first time! 😀
To prolong your mascar use you can put eye drops in it!
Haha. Waaay better than waiting for it to smell different. :))
Wow this is so helpful! Thank you so much for this post 🙂

Glad to hear it!
I also go with the smell 😉 I have a rather sensitive nose, so I pick it up immediately if it started to go off. However I find that those that I use frequently, dry up before they develop funny smell.
Now I just throw away the mascaras that I tried and they didn’t knock off my top favorite, so I at most have 2 in rotation – easy to remember when it was open that way 😀
Ohh now I want washi tapes!! hahaha i once tried doing this using good ol scotch tape! but i agree, this is indeed a cuter way! 🙂
Yikes, I should toss my mascara soon. Thanks for the reminder! And good idea with the washi tape. I’m going to do that for my purchases going forward. I’m horrible with remembering when I bought what!
Oh, how cute!
I bought a bunch of small labels from the office supply section and I use those labeling my makeup things, like mascara and depotted eyeshadows.
