Happy 30th, Burt’s Bees!

BurtsBees30th-0

Some time last week, I was invited to Seda Hotel to celebrate Burt’s Bees 30th birthday! Burt’s Bees started from really humble beginnings, made by a man named Burt Shavitz—the actual person on the Burt’s Bees tin cans!—and a woman named Patricia Quimby. Burt was raising bees for honey, when he met Patricia, who found a way to use all the unused bee byproducts and crafted them into the products we now still see on shelves today.

The ‘0’ is made of beeswax and the sign was spelled out with ingredients they use to make Burt’s Bees products.

As you might have noticed, if you’re an ol’ regular here, I’ve been steering my beauty interests into a more natural and green direction. Burt’s Bees is a very accessible brand if you’re looking to go for cleaner ingredients. They like saying that their products are made from “ingredients you can spell.” I know they’re known for their lip care items, but they actually have great body care and skin care ranges.

The place was decorated so lovely, filled with the ingredients that they make their products with. We were also able to watch a few videos to kind of introduce the brand, past the lip balm and the hand cream. 🙂 Here’s one of the films they showed us:

Burt’s Bees, the brand itself, is still cruelty-free, but it was sold to Clorox a few years ago, in case you were wondering. Patricia Quimby bought out Burt’s shares eons ago, so he’s not technically part of Burt’s Bees anymore, but they still compensate him for the usage of his name and likeness.

Burt’s Bees has also expanded to six skincare lines for both men and women:
Radiance: infused with Royal Jelly, a bee byproduct that’s filled with a lot of essential nutrients and vitamins
Daisy White: features daisy white extract from the Macedonian region, for its whitening properties to target uneven complexions
Acne Solutions: acne-fighting system with willow bark extract and salicylic acid
Intense Hydration: formulated with clary sage for skin with need of deep replenishing
Sensitive: for those with delicate complexions, a range formulated with cotton extract
Naturally Ageless: the promise of a more youthful appearance, delivered by pomegranate extract

Liz also held a watercolor workshop, and we were all given a few sheets of paper and some watercolor pans! Who else is secretly wishing beauty bloggers discover a new love for art and painting? 🙂

It was a pretty fun afternoon. I’m the worst at taking photos of myself with friends at events, but I sat next to Shari and Tina, both of whom I always bug on blogs but don’t really get to talk to. So that was nice. 🙂

Burt is actually the subject of a new documentary to be released later this year called Burt’s Buzz. I think it’s out in September; here’s the trailer for that:

He’s such an inspirational character! He still lives in a house with no heated running water and wood-fired stoves. To the New York Times, he says: “I’ve got 40 acres. And it’s good and sufficient, and it takes good care of me. Everybody has their own idea of what a good place to be is, and this is mine.”

I received a few body care products from the Burt’s Bees team that I’m hoping to review within the next few weeks. 🙂 Please share your favorite Burt’s Bees products!

  1. Those forks are adorable.
I can’t wait to read your reviews! I’ve been interested in trying Burt’s Bees out for a while, but I’m sort of holding back because they’re a bit expensive (for me).

  2. Burt is so cute! Love the natural feel of the brand. I love their tinted chapsticks because the color payoff is amazing for a balm. I was sent the royal jelly radiance cleanser and it was a total miss for me. It smelt so bad and was really drying 😦

    • Oh no, maybe it wasn’t great for you? I haven’t tried their skin care, but the moisturizers are great for me, personally.
