Since it’s Harry Potter Week here, I decided to pattern my 5 Things Friday on 5 “Magical” Products that I’ve encountered in my brief makeup life. I have skin care and seemingly boring-ish products here, but they’re the things that actually let makeup be exciting because they take care of the basics.
Aesop Parsley Seed Cleansing Masque
I rotate a lot of skin care products, but this one is a mainstay. This is a great wash-off clay-like mask that just jumpstarts your skin when it’s starting to seem a little weary and dull. I don’t always remember to use this (lazy), but when I do, I always wonder why I keep forgetting about it.
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer
I bought this expensive bottle on a whim—serious liquid gold, folks. This just preps and primes my face for whatever else I put on it. I find that it just makes everything look better. This is what I suspect turned me into a primer nut, but even though I’ve met a lot of good ones after this one, nothing has been able to oust it from top spot just yet.
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Eyeshadow was always a bit annoying to deal with for me. I like it… for the first hour or so before it disappears from my lids. I’ve tried numerous eye primers, but this one has been the best for my eyelid’s level of oiliness, and I absolutely love it. It’s truly magic—or at least, it lets me have a bit of fun by making my eyeshadow stick around longer.
Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder
Ah, this seemingly gimmicky powder has squeezed its way into my regular makeup life. I rarely go out without at least one of these on my face. Lighting effects (which could be argued as “magical, mystical, mythical”) aside, this is a great powder that makes my makeup look 10x better, inexplicably.
Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Lash Serum
This is a great lash serum that I would never have thought to buy at full retail price (cough, $95, cough). I noticed a substantial improvement in my lashes when I used this that seems to have stuck around months after I ran out of this serum. Sadly, its price is keeping me from repurchasing it, but if I had more money and if I cared more about my lashes, I totally would.
MAKE Super Matte Lip Pencil
And this is just a bonus item, really. Kind of like the fun magic trick you pull out at parties but have no real use for. This wonderful pencil transforms your lip products into a matte one, which is great if you have a lip shade you really like but can’t love because it’s not matte. The best part about this? It makes your lipstick last longer, too.
So, those are my magic products, to conclude Harry Potter Week on Softly Sometimes. Share a few of yours below!

Which Ambient Lighting Powder is your favorite? I’ve been thinking of getting one for a while now, but I’e always been like, can they really live up to the hype?
My favorite is Mood Light! 🙂 It really depends on what you intend to use it for. It’s a great finishing step (kinda like the Guerlain Météorites) and I find that it’s OK for oil control for me, but I’m not oily and general consensus is that it’s not good for that. I always feel like hype ruins the experience of a product, so I would suggest figuring out what you want to use it for and try to see from reviews, etc. if it’d be good for that.
wow! I will try that Veil Mineral Primer 🙂
You should do a tutorial with them 😀

It’s a great product 🙂 My favorite primer, for sure.
Everything Hourglass is magical – sigh. Loved this fun series:)
Truth! Thank you so much for reading x 🙂
I have the ambient lighting palette and I love it so much, I try to use it sparingly! I haven’t used a face primer in AGES! but that fact that you called it liquid gold makes me want to try it out badly!! 🙂
Omg it is the literal best. I hoard primers but nothing has topped this so far
Hourglass ambient lighting powder is on my wishlist but omg it’s so expensive and not available in The Netherlands 😦
Aw, it’s not available here either, so I usually order online or ask someone who can to get it for me, lol.
