Sample Stash Sunday: Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick Set

I was going to publish this post next Sunday, but I figured it might be useful for people who wanted to get this set during the Sephora VIB sale this week.

OK, so I was eyeing Lovecraft from the new Kat Von D Studded Kiss range, but when I was about to buy it, I spotted a minis set with 9 shades that included Lovecraft, so I thought I’d give it a go. The Studded Kiss Lipstick range wasn’t really met with the best reviews—basically failing at their “an innovative lipstick that coats lips with bold color,10-hour wear, and luxe comfort” claims—so I’m not sure what possessed me to get this, but $39 for nine shades didn’t seem like a bad deal to me.

Here’s how much product you get when you extend the bullet:

The selection of shades is pretty decent, representing quite a good amount of shades of the range. From left to right: Countess (matte hot orange red), Agatha (matte pale peach nude), Adora (metallic golden red), Sexer (iridescent fluorescent pink), Wonderchilde (iridescent neon lilac), Bachelorette (matte reddish fuchsia), Mötorhead (matte black cherry), Lovecraft (matte mauve pink nude), Hexagram (matte blood red)

I wish I we got Poe (bluuuue), Slayer (blaaaack), or some other weird shade, but these are OK, too. Here they are, in the same order, swatched:

FOTD - OCT5
Wearing Mötorhead – This color is e v e r y t h i n g, but it is patchy as all HALE. Wow. This photo looks way worse than (I think) it did in real life, but there you go. Patchy. I’d love to buy the full size, because I got the most from-stranger compliments on the afternoon I wore this than any other lipstick in my entire life, but shit. This is an awful texture. It almost makes me want to cry.

Kat Von D - Wonderchilde, Bachelorette
Wearing Wonderchilde (L) and Bachelorette (R) — Wonderchilde is a SUPER FUN color and I love that I have it in a mini size! I will wear this until it is an itty bitty stub of beautiful neon iridescence. Bachelorette is a shade I didn’t think I’d like very much, but I do. It drags a little, too, but the texture is much better than Mötorhead. I would love a full size of this, if I ever finish it up.

Row 1:
Hexagram — I got chills when I swiped this on because, wow, it is a beautiful, classic red. The texture is similar to Bachelorette: a little draggy, but smooth for the most part.
Agatha — This is really quite atrocious on me. It’s a very white-based nude that just makes me look like a corpse or someone who ate a crapload of flour. The texture is horrible on me.

Row 2:
Countess — It’s very bright and orange, and I kind of like it but I don’t know if I can wear it in public without feeling self-conscious.
Lovecraft — This was way too mauve for me and my skin tone, but very nice other than that. I didn’t notice any emphasis on lip lines and dry patches but it may be because it’s quite close to my natural lip color. I still kind of really want it?

Not pictured, but worn:
Adora — I like it, but it’s too warm of a red for me. Did not make me feel awesome, and I did not feel like reapplying after eating.
Sexer — This is definitely not my color, but the texture is great (compared with the other shades).

All in all, I think it’s a great deal if you wanted to noncommittally try out different lipstick shades, but the texture is definitely not perfect. The lipsticks smell like baked goods (I am not a fan) and I’ve had no problems with the caps popping open in my bag, like some reviews have mentioned.

OMG!! Countess…..<3 it! Beautiful shade and looks beautiful on u!

  2. I can’t say no to minis and sets, but I haven’t really heard a lot of good things about these so I’ll most probably skip!

    • They’re not that bad, tbh, but I wouldn’t get full-sizes unless it was a color that I really, really, really liked. /weeps silently for Mötorhead

I don’t know if you still buy Mac, but I recently picked up Sin from the Rocky Horror collection and it’s pretty close if not a dead ringer for Mötorhead! A bit hard to work with too, but maybe not as patchy as sin. I’m currently love love loving it!!! Perfect fall vampy lip that doesn’t make me look goth 🙂

    • Haha I totally was! They’re really not that bad, on the whole. Some shades are really, really nice and aren’t as scary-looking as Mötorhead (patchiness, ick) or Agatha (just gross, period).

  4. Maybe a lip base for Motorhead, then application using a lip brush instead of straight from the bullet? It looks great on you, hope you love it enough to spare the few extra minutes applying it.

    • Yeah, I thought about that, too. So fussy!! 😦 But you’re right. When the occasion calls for it, I’ll just take extra time to apply it. 🙂

  5. If motorhead didn’t look like that, I’d have bought it ages ago. Take that mini and go to NARS. I bet there’s an audacious in that color… maybe Bette.

PS. This is a huge turn of events (don’t know what else to call it)… You’re in the dark lipstick rabbit hole. Welcome…

    • I was thinking Liv or Ingrid! Haha pero yeah, pag paubos na siguro. 🙂

P.S. Omg vampy lipsticks are my fave indulgence + statement lip. I was just never all that into brights, and wearing dirt-colored lips seemed like a much better option, haha. It still is!!
