Statement Necklaces Confuse Me

Betty and Biddy - Lolita

Like, what statement are you making, really?

I don’t usually wear statement necklaces, but despite that, I bought 3 (???) a few months ago from this site called Betty & Biddy. Just to give it a try; see if I like it. (I think this is demonstrative also of how dumb I am with my money sometimes.)

I found out about them from Girl Friday’s Beauty Blog and bought some necklaces because they honestly didn’t cost that much. I think I might have been feeling uninspired~ about my wardrobe or something. Anyway! I bought them, and I haven’t really worn them out yet, and I’m not sure I will any time soon, because let’s be honest—I don’t know how to wear these things.

They’re cute, though. I like this one called Lolita a lot, but again… not sure how/where to wear it. I usually wear small necklaces, but they’re way more expensive than these ones. Anyway. I found out that Betty and Biddy don’t actually make their jewelry, they just source the pieces (confirmed here) and that upset me so much, just because I thought I was supporting a small business. I guess I can liken it to buying cosmetics from an indie company only to find out that they just repackaged the colors that they can get wholesale.

The funny thing is that I found out about this whole thing from a YouTuber who just launched her own shop. Please compare:

I mean. I don’t even know if I’m pissed. If it’s anyone’s fault, it’s probably mine? But anyway, I suppose my purpose for this post is to serve as a kind of caveat. This necklace in question (as I said, I bought two more, but those were cheaper) is not that cheap, but it is also not as expensive as the ones I usually buy. I feel like I should have just stuck with the shops that I love and really resonate with my aesthetics. The thing that bugs me the most about this is that the necklaces came from China when I thought they were made by small business owners.

Oh well. Lesson learned, I suppose. Nothing I can do about it at this point! I’ll try wearing one today, just to see what it feels like, maybe?

Have you made any similar dumb internet purchases? Come lament with me, lol.

[NEW] Blog Sale Up

Just a short and quick announcement that I’ve got a new blog sale up with some pretty good deals. I’m hoping to do this periodically but let’s see if I can get over sentimentality, lol.

Blog Sale - Lipsticks

Head on over to this link to see what’s up for grabs. I’m doing another blog sale with books (probably next week) so hang tight if you want to combine orders.

This post will self-destruct in two weeks!

New Releases From Maybelline*

Earlier this week, I got a cute surprise from Maybelline: some of their new releases, which includes four lipsticks and three brow mascaras, all tucked into this hot pink lip purse! I’ve fallen behind the new Maybelline releases since I’ve steered my beauty consumption towards a more cruelty-free route quite a while ago.

Maybelline - Pink Alert Lipsticks - Bottom

The four lipsticks are variations of pink, as they are part of the Maybelline Pink Alert Lipsticks, which is a new addition to their Color Sensational range. I think it’s an attempt to kind of “up the amp” in pink lipsticks, doing away with the prissy, frilly pinks with four kind of really in-your-face “rebellious” pinks, which they call “runway-ready pink shades.”

Maybelline - Pink Alert Lipsticks - POW 1, POW 2, POW 3, POW 4
There are four pinks: POW 1, POW 2, POW 3, and POW 4. POW 1 and POW 3 and blue-based, cool pinks. POW 2 and POW 4 are warmer pinks, with POW 4 being the most coral-y of them all. All are pretty bright. If you know me, I can’t handle bright lipsticks on my visage (lol), but you know what? It actually wasn’t so bad.

But first, the lipsticks. Read More

Makeup Inventory: Le Métier de Beauté True Colour Eye Shadows & Kaleidoscopes

I have a love-hate relationship with Le Métier de Beauté, that’s actually more of a love relationship with a very serious side-eye at the price point. I’m not going to sugarcoat~ it or anything—this brand is pretty dang expensive. And yet I am lured in, all the time. It’s been a few months since I bought makeup from LMdB (not counting the Beauty Vault VIP items), though. As I mentioned in my last Beauty Vault VIP post, I’d be happy to swatch my Le Métier de Beauté eyeshadows for um, you know, science. Sunny said she’d like to see them, so here they are.

In hindsight, I don’t have all that much, but hopefully this helps you out! The tricky thing with LMdB is that their production is so freaking limited, I almost always just give up on something Limited Edition and hope for the best. The singles are permanent, though, but I don’t have a lot of them. 🙂

I’ll start with the LE palette that I did hound: The Mélange de Colour Fashion Eye Palette. To date, this is, I think, their biggest palette release with 18 shades in really tiny pans. The shadows are (mostly) so creamy, though.

One finger swipe on bare skin:

If you want my full review on this, click here. The Ultimate Makeup did a swatch comparison with some of her existing LMdB shades. I think this particular palette has no dupes of permanent shades, but some shades from other palettes are resurrected.

Le Metier de Beaute - Eyeshadow Singles and Kaleidoscopes

Anyway, moving on! Here are my Kaleidoscopes and singles (and a duo from a GWP my gurlfran got for me). See? Not that much. I’ll start with the singles swatches!

Le Metier de Beaute - Eyeshadow Singles - Swatches - Naked, Peachy Keen, Tamarack, Corinthian, Goldstone, Alexandrite, Midnight Sky, Noir, Brown as a Berry Duo

From L-R, I’ve got: Naked, Peachy Keen, Tamarack, Corinthian, Goldstone, Alexandrite, Midnight Sky, Noir, and the shades from the GWP/Brown as a Berry duo. Singles are $30 but have much more than twice as much product as MAC eyeshadows.

Texturally, the smoothest, best shades are the shimmery ones, i.e. Corinthian (a most beautiful taupe!), Alexandrite, Midnight Sky. I don’t think they do mattes exceptionally well. Noir, for example, is kind of a pitiful black. The other mattes (Naked, Peachy Keen, Tamarack) are OK, but nothing particularly note-worthy.

I don’t have any other “iconic” LMdB shades, other than Corinthian. I am most intrigued by their bolder shades, like Fire Lily and Water Sapphire, since that’s what they seem to be super good at. The thing with LMdB eyeshadows, is that they were made to be subtle, because of the Couches de Couleur (layering of color) technique that they often use and employ.

Xiao of Messy Wands has a great comprehensive post on the technique here. LMdB is known for releasing quads called kaleidoscopes that you can use on their own or using the couches de couleur technique.

Basically, it relies on layering four shades, each with a specific purpose: to Brighten, for Warmth, Focus, and Depth. A simple determinant also is this sequence of layering: Cool, Warm, Cold, Hot. Xiao’s post has a chart that determines how the single shades can be used and how they are grouped.

The Painted Lily has a post on trying out the CdC, which I think is a pretty good demonstration of what I mean when I say “complexity.”

Here’s a video demonstrating couches de couleur:

And now, for the quad/kaleidoscope swatches.

Le Metier de Beaute - Eyeshadow Kaleidoscopes - Northern Lights, Silk Road, Gravite

L-R, I’ve got: Northern Lights (my first Kaleidoscope!), Silk Road, and Gravité.

As you all know, I’m a sucker for palettes, and the color stories of these Kaleidoscopes are usually too beautiful to resist. These palettes are truly special because of their often unique combinations. I love how using all of the shades in Northern Lights, for example, yields this soft look where you can see the hints of purple and rust:

Le Metier de Beaute - Northern Lights - Face 1

The formulation of the eye shadows makes it so that your eye looks, despite layering, won’t turn muddy, but instead produce a beautiful complex eye look that enhances the beauty of your eyes. I have passed on a lot of them since getting into the brand (Saint-Domingue is my one true regret), just because the pans are too big + they are $95.

Still, I’ve been pretty happy with all of my LMdB purchases. I don’t think I’ve met a dud; just colors that didn’t suit me, etc. It’s hard to jump in on a brand that’s not so accessible, is pretty expensive and relatively polarizing (ONE TRU MAKEUP LUVV vs. OVERHYPED), but I truly love about 90% of everything I’ve bought from them and use at least one LMdB product on a daily basis.

Do you have Le Métier de Beauté eyeshadows? Which ones are your favorite?

Lazy Girl Makeup: One-Shadow Smokey Eye

Launching (very late) today is a series I’m hoping to keep doing for a long time: Lazy Girl Makeup! It’s basically a post every two weeks in which I share with you my lazy ways. Here, for example, is a one-shadow smokey eye look. I did a similar look last year, which you can find here.

Lazy Girl Makeup - Smokey Eye - Steps

  1. The main difference with this look and the old one is that I used a kohl/creamy pencil first. Draw a messy, rich line near your lash line. Don’t worry if it’s not neat!
  2. Smudge dat liner. I used the e.l.f. Eyeshadow “C” Brush, which if I’m not mistaken, is really made for a smokey eye.
  3. Pat on your chosen shadow (here, Le Métier de Beauté’s Midnight Sky, which is a deep sapphire-navy) all over the lid, going over the crease a tiny, tiny bit. Again. Don’t worry if it’s not neat.
  4. Use a clean blending brush (here, the MAC 217) to blend all of the edges and haze the shadow out.
  5. Apply the same liner on the lower lash line.
  6. Smudge it out with your chosen eyeshadow.
  7. And yer done! At this point, you can curl your lashes and add mascara, but I am truly lazy and opted not to.

LMMU - One Shadow Smokey Eye - Eyes

As far as I know, a traditional smoky eye is most pigmented along the lash line, and the color just sort of hazes up in a smokey~ way up towards the crease/brow bone. You can pretty much do this technique with any color you could possibly want. The eyeliner I used isn’t even black—just dark enough.

Lazy Girl Makeup - One Shadow Smoky Eye - Face

Rest of the makeup: Graymelin CC Base Cream*, K-Palette Cover Control 0 Kuma Concealer (Type 2), Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Pressed Powder (Shade 2), The Body Shop Brow & Liner Kit (02), Illamasqua Cream Blush (Promise), Pixy Silky Fit Lipstick (Autumn Apricot)*

This is a pretty handy technique if you’re not so confident with your eye makeup skills just yet—just basically pat then blend out! If you want, you can also use a transition shade to help blend out the edges.

What would you want to see next on Lazy Girl Makeup?

Le Métier de Beauté Beauty Vault VIP May 2014

Just a quick post on the May 2014 Box from the Le Métier de Beauté Beauty Vault VIP. If you’ve been here long enough, this may be a familiar installment for you, since subscribers are on their 10th month of the service. The Beauty Vault VIP offering was a year-long subscription service by New York-based luxury cosmetics brand, Le Métier de Beauté. You signed up and paid up front, so it was a bit steep. The amount paid including shipping and handling was evened out by the 3rd or 4th month, though.

LMdB Beauty Vault VIP May 2014

For the May box, subscribers received two True Colour Eye Shadows, which are some of my favorite eyeshadow formulas. It seems like everyone received the same shades: Peachy Keen and Goldstone.

LMdB Beauty Vault VIP May 2014 - Header

Peachy Keen is very close to my skin tone, just a hair peachier and warmer. Goldstone is a very warm, medium gold.

Le Metier de Beaute True Colour Eyeshadow - Swatches - Peachy Keen, Goldstone

These swatches are made with one swipe, over bare skin. The eyeshadows come in a small round compact in a rubbery black plastic material, each with its own mirror (the size of the lid). The eyeshadows retail for $30 and are 3.8g or 0.13 oz. each. MAC eyeshadows clock in at 1.5g or 0.05 oz. each.

Le Metier de Beaute True Colour Eyeshadow - Swatches - Naked, Peachy Keen, Goldstone

I had another LMdB eye shadow single in a neutral color called Naked, and I wanted to see it beside Peachy Keen. Naked is way lighter and way more neutral in comparison with Peachy Keen, whose peachiness I appreciate much more when it’s beside Naked.

I’m thinking of doing an LMdB swatch post of all of my eyeshadows by the brand. Is that something you’d be interested in? Do let me know!

Two months to go until the end of the sub. Right now, I’m undecided if I should take the plunge. I am kind of saving and decluttering, so I might not, but if I minimize all purchases for the twelve months of the sub, it might be worth it to try again.

Music Festival Carry-Ons: For Lolas

Lola means “grandmother”in Filipino, which is pretty much an accurate descriptor of my whole entire being true self. This lola went to a music festival called Wanderland a few days ago and this is what this lola brought along. The “beauty” bits, at least. Lord knows I brought PRICKLY HEAT POWDER and WET WIPES, because like I said, my true self is a lola.

Music Festival Stuff

Pressed powder & oil blotting sheets to battle the oilies. SPF’d lip balm for sun protection & lip moisture. A cute lip color—my current favorite!—for cuteness. Cheek tint for extra cuteness. Sunscreen* for uselessness because we didn’t even go until the sun was about to set. An expensive misting of water, because you never know when you’re going to need that, what with the heat of the world these days and all.

The funny thing is that I didn’t even use any of this stuff I brought with me. Because I was too busy being a fake lola and having fun, well way into the night!

I want to know: What would you bring to a music festival? Do you think you’d end up using anything you brought along?
