Short Hair, I Kinda Care

You don’t see a lot of hair posts here, but that’s just because I used to be so meh about my hair that I didn’t even bother. At all. I brushed through my hair maybe once a month. And you must know, I have a lot of hair. Or had, I guess. I chopped most of it off in April.

I used to just pull my hair up in a top knot, a bun, or a ponytail if I needed to “style” it. It turns out, short hair really is more high maintenance. Go me. (I do feel more like myself with this haircut, though, so I am willing to suffer the consequences.) Ahem. These are my “styling tools,” so to speak. They are more like my arsenal for “Hope You Still Look Passably Decent By Noon!” hair.

I have thick, stubborn hair, so I just have to face the facts that I cannot wield it. None of us can. It has no other master. …However, here are some of the things I’ve been using to kind of tame it a little and make it look okay.

ShortHairProducts

On damp hair, I use TIGI Bed Head Small Talk (nicked from my sister; it smells like blueberries/those little Flintstones vitamins I used to snack on take v. responsibly) and then I blow-dry the crap out of little twisties I make with my hair using my cheap Babyliss 1200 Hairdryer. These layers will not stay put so I silly-putty them to semi-oblivion using my brother’s pot o’wax. He actually has most of the colors in the Gatsby Moving Rubber range, the freak, but my hair needs to be whipped into submission by a heavy-duty wax, so I use the grey one (Gatsby Moving Rubber Grunge Mat, click here for LOLs to be had), which is not pictured here, the most.

With product, my hair looks somewhat wavy, and interestingly texturized, not at all like floppy dog ears or a mushroom cloud:

Without product, well. You know, disastah. I call it my boring/beige Tita hair. Which is okay. If I wanted to look like a tita:

I’m currently looking for cruelty-free alternatives to the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, which seems to be everyone’s favorite thang, and/or recipes for a comparable DIY spray I can concoct. BUT I CAN’T FIND EPSOM SALT ANYWHERE. That is both ridiculous and frustrating, but anyway, the hunt continues. For now, I’ll stick to these things I’ve nicked from my siblings.

In case they fail me, I’ll always have bobby pins and headbands.

Nosy Beauty Vol. 29: Sasha

Hey, Internet. I’ve been having a bit of an issue getting a hold of people to feature here on Nosy Beauty, so for the meantime, I’m going to post a new entry (hopefully) every other Friday now, as opposed to every single Saturday, which I used to do before its inevitable, temporary demise.

Anyway, this week, I’ve got Sasha of Go for Garbo, one of my favorite new beauty blogs, and also reader/writer of my favorite book blog: Other Sashas. Enjoy!

Hello, Carina’s corner of the Internet! My name is Sasha Martinez, and I write for a living. I’m also a gangly, awkward nerdface with a belated but nonetheless ardent fascination with makeup, helped along by ch-ch-ch-changes brought on by a belated and horrifically tedious skincare regimen.

I guess this fascination came to a head when I found myself keeping a dedicated pocket notebook just for makeup thoughts—partly tracking my use of products, partly a skincare diary, mostly arguments with myself re buying two eye palettes in one go, yadda. And then I was asked, months ago, to do a Nosy Beauty post, and I realized I was having such a hard time not going into detail about how a product works on me. And then, I don’t know, this working-it-out-with-myself grew beyond my notebook; that is: I started a secret (hah) beauty blog. Me. The gangly, awkward nerdface with an abiding hysterical fright of selfies. (So here’s a selfie.)

nosybeauty — Awkward Selfie 01

The TL;DR version of my face is: I used to just resignedly, not-too-effectively hide behind carelessly bought, never-updated makeup. I’d spent months (years?) the feeling that my real face was just lurking beneath all of that gunk—not the best thought, really, to have about one’s self, I should think, and in any situation. But I got rid of the Lazies, and my skin’s the best it’s ever looked. Sure, it’s not perfect yet; I can give you a rundown of what’s wrong with each and every pore that has the misfortune to belong to my face; I can never just post a selfie, good lord, ladies, how do you all do it so easily? But makeup’s definitely more fun than it’s ever been.

I am obnoxiously self-indulgent these days when it comes to my skin; I’m making up for lost time. And I’ve become very uptight, too, when it comes to makeup. It takes me months to decide to buy something, as I want nothing short of the Holy Grail. My still-too-short, healthier relationship with makeup and skincare has mostly been me researching what’s worked for other people, more thumb-twiddling re actual purchase, and then hoping against hope that it works for me. The fussiness pays off, though; I’ve consistently found products that make me feel better about myself. And I get to take more selfies, albeit derpily. Like so:

(The violin solo may now be switched off.) So. I bring a teeny makeup kit with me most of the time—but because I am an absolute lazy-pants when it comes to retouching, I hardly reach for it. The things I bring with me are usually just safeties; there are days that I don’t need to reach for this bag at all. This pretty much points to how obscenely long it takes me to get ready going out. (Three cheers for industrial strength base surviving in this tropical, high-summer heat.)

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

I tend to gravitate towards products that will stay on my face until I will them to leave—or, at the very least, products that will help all the other gunk on my face to stay put, as I’ve always leaned toward oiliness. I like leaving the house confident that I don’t need to worry about my face melting off after the commute; or having to duck into the bathroom before a meeting around lunchtime; or worrying about leaving a smudge on my monitor when I lean in to see tiny type as I’ve forgotten my glasses, which is too often an occurrence, haaay. So I take my sweet sweet sweet, late-for-work-again time. (More so if I decide on a winged eye. Myeh.)

Processed with VSCOcam with a4 preset

So: Sunscreen, primer, base (sheered out, wahoo!), concealer—all this set with a powder, to the high heavens. I’m still learning how to use blush—didn’t have one until a week ago, shrug, and so far I have just that one—so on it goes when I remember. And then my eyes and my lips figure themselves out. And, for what it’s worth: The Mia Thermopolisian eyebrows of high school are so working for me right now, in the year of our Lord Cara Delevingne.

Everything else is extra, really; everything else should be unnecessary. But they’re such fun to put on. Figuring out what kind of eye to go for, whether I’m going to wing my eyeliner or not, figuring out what kind of red lipstick to wear for the day, figuring out if I can take a chill pill and bust out a nude lip. Discovering orange lipsticks! Finding out that highlighter is magic! It’s all so fun. And time-consuming. Self-indulgent. And alarmingly taking-over-my-desk-y. But fun.

Processed with VSCOcam with a4 preset

Now that I’m pretty much set with the essentials—skincare, base, yadda—I find myself reaching for other kinds of products. A bronzer, a highlighter, my first eyeshadow palettes. I just want to try something, one thing, just once. In at least two colors. I’m pretty uptight, yes, but I give a wee bit of wiggle for exploring. (Based on weeks and weeks of research, and back-and-forths with myself.) (My already-disemboweled bank account emits a little tremor whenever the thought comes up.) I mean: I already have a foundation and a tinted moisturizer on rotation—why not add another one, or three? Why not get every industrial-strength concealer known to man? What is this Shu Uemura hard pencil thingamajig, and will I have to throw out my one other brow thingamajig when I get it? I’ve only had one blush until a week ago, why not get more? What are the magical properties of Guerlain ball things? What in blazes is a CC Cream? Why not have my paycheck forwarded to Beauty Bar, Rustan’s, and Watsons? Why not learn to subsist on eyeshadow fallout and book smell from hereon? Why not, Sasha, why not?

Okay. So. Right. How does one a gangly, awkward nerdface with an abiding hysterical fright of selfies end this gracefully? With a selfie, naturally. Here’s me, trying to channel my inner Not Awkward At All Lady, subsisting on two hours of sleep, an obscene amount of caffeine, and a generous helping of VSCO Moody filter. Because.

WHEE! Thanks, Sasha! I hope y’all enjoyed that because I totally did. Again, for more of Sasha’s beauty musings, check out Go for Garbo, and for book-ish thoughts (of which she has a lot), check out Other Sashas.

Unboxing: BDJ Box May 2014*

Hi everyone! I’m back from a (sorta) beach trip, which I hope explains the absence. I have been quite busy and then I jumped into a holiday, so. I guess that means I left y’all here. Ah! I was met with the BDJ Box for May 2014* when I got home from Puerto Galera. Thank you, BDJ Box Team! It was a sweet surprise. 🙂

For the past few months, we’ve been getting so much makeup, I didn’t know if I could handle any more of it (a lie), but I was so happy to see what we got for this month (not a lie)! May 2014’s theme is Summer Radiance. I think it’s kind of a stretch, since I got a strange, albeit great, mishmash of products. I think they all serve their own purpose, theme or no theme.

BDJ Box - May 2014

The first most noticeable full-size item is the too cool for school Pumpkin Sleeping Pack (Php 689, 100ml). I’m not quite sure how to use it, but it’s an overnight treatment that’s supposed to make you wake up to glowing skin. The two other full-size items are the Dermal Sheet Masks (Php 140, 2 sheets), which I blogged about before. I got the Bee Venom and SYN-AKE variants this time around. I’m kind of terrified of using the SYN-AKE one (there is a large photo of a cobra on the packet), but I’ll persevere in the name of beauty and all that.

This month seems like it might be sachet central, but they’re all generous offerings. There is a box of sachets containing 12 packets each of the Godiva Lico White Whitening Lotion (Php 120, 100ml) and the Gociva Lico White Antiperspirant Deodorant (Php 79, 40ml). I gave both to my sister since I don’t use whitening products (though this lotion has some SPF in it) and I stopped wearing deodorant a few months ago. There were also a bunch of sachets from Organix—3 shampoo/conditioner sets each of the Moroccan Argan Oil (with 2 packets of the oil itself), Biotin and Collagen, and Keratin Oil treatments (Php 499, each 13oz. bottle; Php 499 for 3.3 oz. of oil).

BDJ Box - Revlon Polishes

Last, but not the least, I got two nail lacquers from the Revlon ColorStay Nail Enamel range. They’re supposed to be long-wearing. It looks like I got two cream polishes, a pale yellow (100 Buttercup) and a bright orange (110 Marmalade). I have never tried the Revlon polishes before, but I hope they’re great. I don’t really have nail polish that’s not CF, so I’ll let you know how these hold up against what I have.

BDJBox Coupons

And then there was an influx of coupons. There’s a coupon for a free bra from Avon, some bucks off Bifesta and Lúcido-L products, free add-ons from I Do Nails, 50% off some procedures at Dr. CRB and a free makeover voucher from Professional Artist Cosmetics or PAC.

All in all, I think, this is a great and useful box. I don’t know how I would feel if I paid for it; though honestly, I’m just super happy about the too cool for school mask. I clearly have lofty expectations for life and happiness. The BDJ Box is Php 580/month, though you can subscribe for 1, 3 or 6 months. A 3-month sub costs Php 1700, while a 6-month sub costs Php 3300. I think it’s a small price to pay if you have a limited budget but you like small beauty surprises every now and then. You can treat yo’self and give away the stuff you won’t use as a gesture of goodwill to other people who might enjoy them more than you. Win-win, right?

Did you order the BDJ Box this month? What did you think about it?

Face Off: NARS Ita Kabuki Brush vs. Illamasqua Blush Up Brush

This fun post was brought to you by a NARS SA that gave me the wrong thing (as I previously mentioned here). I was going to buy the NARS Yachiyo brush because it applied blush really beautifully, but the SA gave me this flat brush called the NARS Ita Kabuki brush, which became really famez after YT gurus kept using it as a contour brush.

I already had a similar flat brush, the Illamasqua Blush-Up Brush, so I was a bit miffed by this mistake, but I also wanted to see if this was as good as everyone thought it was. I don’t really contour much, so I didn’t have much use for this, but IDK. I have a weird relationship with stuff, I guess.

NARS Ita vs Illamasqua Blush Up Brush - Brushes

Here’s what they look like, structurally. The Ita brush is comprised of a rubbery matte plank that forks into two planks that sandwich the bristles (the ferrule is black). The Blush Up brush is a bit fan-like but super dense with a shiny black ferrule and handle.

NARS Ita vs Illamasqua Blush Up Brush - Bristles

Comparing the bristles, the Ita brush has wirier bristles and a wider surface area. The bristles are also longer, more sparse, and coarser. The Blush Up brush has a fatter, shorter surface area with super soft, fairly short, and super dense bristles.

NARS Ita vs Illamasqua Blush Up Brush - Bronzer

I used my powder bronzer (Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte & Waterproof Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess) for the purpose of this comparison.

NARS Ita Brush - Product

The Ita brush picks up a fair amount of product.

Illamasqua Blush Up Brush - Bronzer Product

Meanwhile, the Blush Up Brush is the master of excess! You get a lot of pigment using this brush, which is why I like using it for pretty subtle and soft blushes. (I think I should note at this point that the Blush Up brush was made for blushes.)

NARS Ita vs Illamasqua Blush Up Brush - Bronzer Swatches w label

Here’s an idea of how the brushes apply product. Let’s see how well it fares on the face. I applied it along my cheek, angled downward from the top of my ear then blended upwards.

My personal preference for contour is the NARS Ita Kabuki Brush. I don’t contour much so let’s see how much I end up using this thing. I love the Blush Up Brush for blush application, though. It was made as a one-step blush brush, eliminating the need for contour because you create such a harsh angular line with your blush already. It’s a very 80s sensibility, but I think it’s generally great for blush application!

The NARS Ita Kabuki Brush retails for $55. The Illamasqua Blush Up Brush retails for $40. If I had to pick just one brush, I’d probably go for the NARS one.

It looks simple—and it is!—but I did spend quite a bit of time making my base look nice~ I was so happy that I didn’t have to put SPF on my face because it was a night event. Thank tha lawddd. I only put up with SPF because I don’t want to burn under the sun.

What I Wore: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (Ginger), bareMinerals Original Foundation (Medium Beige), BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector (Opal), Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder (Mood Light), & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil (Bouclé Greige), The Body Shop Brow & Liner Kit (02), MAC Paint Pot (Painterly), NARS And God Created the Woman Palette, Sasa Perfect Shape Gel Eyeliner (01 Velvet Black), Happy Skin Eye Am Here to Stay Gel Liner (Peppermint), Maybelline The Rocket Mascara*, NARS x Pierre Hardy Blush (Boys Don’t Cry), Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte & Waterproof Bronzer (Park Avenue Princess), Happy Skin Shut Up & Kiss MeMoisturizing Lippie (The Morning After)

Boys Don’t Cry

Say hello to Boys Don’t Cry—another kinda impulse, kinda not buy from NARS. I’ve been eyeing this blush since the collection came out, aka Summer 2013, aka almost an entire year if not more. I remember falling in love with it online and swatching it every time I pass by NARS, just because I didn’t need any more blush. Especially not 13g more blush…

But, what can I say? I got caught at a weak moment.

NARS - Pierre Hardy - Boys Dont Cry

This is a limited edition blush, so I’m not even sure if it’s still available since it did come out a year ago. The SA claimed that this was the last piece they had in stock (Rustan’s Makati), but she also gave me the wrong brush, so I don’t know if I believe her. More on that later.

NARS - Pierre Hardy - Boys Dont Cry - Overspray Pan

Boys Don’t Cry is a “High Voltage Blush” and is described as a “pink grapefruit” shade. It is quite a reddish coral with a bit of gold overspray (just at the top, for design). It is also so freaking pretty.

NARS - Pierre Hardy - Boys Dont Cry - Size Comparison

In comparison with a standard NARS blush: Boys Don’t Cry has 13g or 0.45oz of product whereas your typical NARS blush just has 4.8g or 0.16oz worth of product. Of course, the price differs, too. Like a lot.

NARS - Pierre Hardy - Boys Dont Cry Swatch

Check out this swatch. So pretty. As you can see, this blush is super freaking pigmented. I kind of feel like it makes me look like a rouged-up harlot.

NARS - Pierre Hardy Blush - Boys Don't Cry - Face Studio Light
In fluorescent light

NARS - Pierre Hardy Blush - Boys Don't Cry - Face Natural Light
In natural light

Fortunately, this blends really easily and can be sheered out when you accidentally apply too much.

I wanted to see if I unwittingly bought another blush in a shade that I already had. Here are the “reds” I have swatched next to Boys Don’t Cry:

NARS - Pierre Hardy - Boys Dont Cry - Swatch Comparison
Swatched, L-R: MAC Extra Dimension Blush (Fiery Impact), Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (Natural Beauty), NARS x Pierre Hardy Blush (Boys Don’t Cry), Canmake Cream Cheek (CL01)

As you can see, in terms of redness, this trumps Tarte’s Natural Beauty, which I believed to be my reddest blush, by a lot. It’s a straight up reddish coral, and I am quite in deep like with it. Hopefully you can still find it in stores. I think a similar blush might be NARS’ Exhibit A, though this has stronger coral tones.

One Week Naked 3: 5 Day Looks

I decided to do the One Week Series with the newest Urban Decay Naked iteration, the Naked 3. I declared my love for this palette way before I even got my hands on it, because I’m stupid. And also, right! This is, by far, my favorite ‘Naked’. I always seem stumped when I try to make looks with it, gravitating to my favorite shades, but even if I feel a little clueless at first, the looks always turn out well.

(In my opinion anyway. Ha.)

Urban Decay Naked 3 - Pans

The Naked 3 has rose-toned neutrals, making it the softest and most romantic palette of all the Naked offerings. There is also kind of a subtle contrast when it comes to the shades, so the transitions can be quite soft and really gradual between most of them.

As an extra bit of “challenge,” I decided to make 5 looks using all of the different shades, so you can see the versatility of this palette. Don’t you find that there is always at least one color you never reach for? Well, let’s see how useable this palette really is.

DAY ONE; shades used: Burnout, Blackheart, Liar, Factory
OW Naked 3 - Face 1

Burnout is my main lid shade for this look, slowly fading into the deeper colors. I started with Liar in the outer third, but it turned out too light so I made it a transition between that and Factory, which I also eased into the outer crease. I added a bit of Blackheart for more intensity and depth in the outermost corner of the eye.

OW Naked 3 - Face 2

Rest of the makeup: Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Pressed Powder (Shade 2), & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil (Bouclé Greige), The Body Shop Brow & Liner Kit (02), NARS Pro-Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base, Urban Decay Naked 3, KATE Super Sharp Liner, Benefit They’re Real Mascara, NARS Powder Blush (Orgasm)

DAY TWO; shades used: Limit, Trick, Nooner, Factory
OW Naked 3 - 2 - Face 1

The main shade for this look is the beautiful Trick, which I blended into Factory. I used Limit as my transition shade, fading the shades up towards the brow bone, with Nooner adding just that perfect amount of depth and haze into the outer corner and crease.

OW Naked 3 - 2 - Eyes

OW Naked 3 - 2 - Face 2

Rest of the makeup: Céléteque Matte Moisturizer (SPF 30), NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer (Ginger), bareMinerals Original Foundation (Medium Beige), & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil (Bouclé Greige), The Body Shop Brow & Liner Kit (02), Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder Palette, NARS Powder Blush (Final Cut), NARS Pro-Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base, Urban Decay Naked 3, Happy Skin Eye Am Here to Stay Liquid Liner, Pixy Volumizing Waterproof Mascara*, Tarte Pure Performance Glamazon Lipstick (Bold)

DAY THREE; shades used: Strange, Limit, Buzz, Nooner, Factory (no primer)
OW - UD Naked 3 - 3 - Face 1

I wanted to use Strange, so I used it as an all-over the lid shade (lid up to brow bone) and eased in Limit in the crease and Nooner in the outer corner of the lid. I added a bit of Buzz in the middle of the lid and Factory in the outer third, but the look remains subdued without a primer.

OW - UD Naked 3 - 3 - Face 2

OW - UD Naked 3 - 3 - Eyes

Rest of the makeup: Pixy UV Whitening Two Way Cake Perfect Fit (Natural Beige)*, K-Palette Real Lasting Eyebrow 24H (02), Inglot brow powder (569), Dolly Wink Liquid Liner (black), BECCA Ultimate Mascara (Black), Happy Skin Eye Am Here to Stay Gel Pencil Eyeliner (Peppermint), Human Nature Mineral Blush (Rosy Cheeks), Rouge Bunny Rouge Succulence of Dew Lipstick (Murmurings)

FACE FOUR; shades used: Dust, Buzz, Mugshot
OW - Naked 3 - 4 - Face 1

I attempted to use Dust, the flakiest, fall-outiest shade in Naked 3, but I made sure to apply it wet. Dust went all over the lid, fading into Mugshot in the outer third. I decided I wanted it more pink, so in the middle of the lid went Buzz.

OW - Naked 3 - 4 - Face 2

Rest of the makeup: The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream, K-Palette Cover Control 0 Kuma Concealer (Type 2), bareMinerals Original Foundation (Medium Beige), & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil (Bouclé Greige), Inglot Eyebrow Powder (569), MAC Paint Pot (Painterly), Happy Skin Eye Am Here to Stay Liquid Liner, Pixy Volumizing Waterproof Mascara*, Tarte Amazonian Clay Matte & Waterproof Bronzer (Park Avenue Princess), NARS x Pierre Hardy Blush (Boys Don’t Cry), KATE Rouge HD Lipstick (PK-17)

DAY FIVE; shades used: Trick, Darkside, Blackheart
OW - Naked 3 - 5 - Face 1

Patted on Trick all over the lid, smudging Darkside on the upper and lower lash lines, topping that off with Blackheart and finally resigning to the fact that I may never actually figure out how to do a “real” smoky eye.

OW - Naked 3 - 5 - Face 2

Rest of the makeup: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock*, Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Pressed Powder (Shade 2), & Other Stories Eyebrow Pencil (Bouclé Greige), The Body Shop Brow & Liner Kit (02), Maybelline The Rocket Mascara*, Sleek Blush (Coral), NARS Satin Lip Pencil (Decanso)

Shade list & look used:

  • Strange: Day 3
  • Dust: Day 4
  • Burnout: Day 1
  • Limit: Day 2, 3
  • Buzz: Day 3, 4
  • Trick: Day 1, 5
  • Nooner: Day 2, 3
  • Liar: Day 1
  • Factory: 1, 2, 3
  • Mugshot: Day 4
  • Darkside: day 5
  • Blackheart: Day 1, 5

Yay, I succeeded in using all of the shades. I know there’s a lot more to this palette, though, so I’m working on another One Week series involving this palette, but for night looks instead. Oooh! Aaah! Maybe… Stay tuned. 🙂

I haven’t bought much makeup in the past month and a half (just 4 makeup items for myself), but I’ve been having a lot of fun with the stuff I do have, which is how it should be anyway. What’s your favorite way to wear this palette? Do share in the comments below!
