Drugstore Finds: NYX Powder Blush Collection

NYX Powder Blush - Closed Compact

I’ve never been a blush fiend. I never got it to show up on my face the way I envisioned a certain color to. However, I’d been bitten by a blush bug quite recently and I’ve acquired quite the spectrum. If you’re a bit hesitant to build your blush collection (since some are so pricey), you could start with NYX!

Here is my NYX Powder Blush Collection, so far. I have the ff. shades:

  • Bourgeois Pig
  • Desert Rose
  • Cocoa
  • Raisin
  • Taupe

NYX Powder Blush - Open Compacts

I have my reasons for picking up each shade. Bourgeois Pig, just because it felt so defiantly un-me that I had to try it. I got Desert Rose because I’m a sucker for rose in general and it seemed like a nice, wearable and safe option.

The last three, Cocoa, Raisin, and Taupe, I wanted to try contouring with. I know. Crazy, right?

Here are some swatches on my hand:

In terms of pigmentation, the pinks have the power. Cocoa was a bit too red to contour with. I didn’t expect Raisin to be purpley, at all, but then I should have known. What with a name like raisin… And Taupe might as well be named Invisible Taupe because it barely shows up on my skin tone.

Here I am (eek!*), trying out my “contour experiment” with Cocoa. I put it in the hollows of my cheeks, then put Desert Rose above (as in on the plane of the face and not layered) it. There isn’t much contrast, so it doesn’t really look like anything special. Turns out, I can use Cocoa to contour!

NYX Powder Blush - Cocoa, Desert Rose - Face Swatch

In general, the blushes are decent quality, especially for the price. They are a bit powdery, but nothing that can’t be worked around. I don’t like the case because I find it flimsy and hard to store.

To be honest, I don’t know if I’ll be grabbing for two or three of these shades all that often, just because they do nothing for my face, due to my coloring. I think that Raisin and Taupe would be lovely eyeshadow colors, so maybe I’ll look into using these colors for that purpose. Bourgeois Pig was in my February Favorites, and Desert Rose looks like a beautiful red shade.

If you’re looking to experiment with blushes, but don’t want to break the bank trying to find The One, try these out first. They’ve got an awesome range, too. 🙂

All the blushes except for Raisin are 0.14oz or 4g. Raisin was 0.18oz or 5.2g. I don’t know why that is. These are available for $5 each.

I got my NYX Powder blushes from Stuff In Style (Bourgeois Pig at Php 300) and Digital Traincase (Everything else at Php 250 each). There was also a 20% off promo at the time, which I hope explains my hoarding shame.

* eek! = No other makeup; I just washed it all off, then I figured I could write a review before going to bed. Which is the smart thing to do when you want the whole world to see your chapped lips.

I’m a sucker for cream blushes, they look the best on my dry skin. Maybe I should look into trying some cream blushes from NYX!

    • I haven’t tried their cream blushes, but they’re generally a pretty good brand, imho 🙂 Would love to hear about it if you end up trying any!

  2. I obsessed with your skin – it is soooooo clear! You’re my skinspiration. Plus, you’re in my tone family so I like paying attention to what shades you use as a barometer of whether or not I should check out a shade you feature.

  3. Looks like taupe will be a good contour color for me. It doesn’t seem to have any orange in it.

    • No orange that I can see! Hope it works out well for you if you decide to try it. 🙂 I’m actually willing to let mine go if you’re not iffy about “pre-loved” (lol) makeup. I literally just used it max 2x, once out and once for this swatch. Let me know.

      • That’s so generous of you. I’ve been wanting to try mac taupe blush but it doesn’t seem to be at mac stores I went to… or the SA just didn’t know they have it. I think this could work the same way as mac taupe does. And no, I don’t mind pre-loved 😀

      • I don’t know what the MAC Taupe blush looks like! If you can cover the shipping, I can send it over! Email me. 🙂

I have one NYX powder blush and I love it, and I’m going to be trying the other shades as well.

    • Yep, I think I saw yours in a recent post! 🙂 I want to get Mauve and Silky Rose, but I know that that would be overkill so maybe in the future.

  5. Your skin is soooo good! I envy youuuuu!! I don’t have any NYX blushes yet but the Bourgeois Pig and the Raisin ones look interesting! Thanks for the swatches! 😀

  6. I love NYX, but haven’t really ventured away from their lip products. Were you able to get Antwerp na? 🙂

  7. …and because you bought a lot of these NYX blushes, I bought another 3 shades, and those added to my 2 other NYX blushes! Hahaha! 😛

I love NYX, it stays put all day on me! 🙂

  8. I love how unconventional Bourgeouis Pig is named, compared to the other four. Heck, compared to your usual blush shade names!

Nice collection! I have taupe for contouring! Figured it will be great for practice! Hihi what brush do you use to apply blush? 🙂

    • Hi Kiks, sorry for the late reply! I use the RealTechniques blush brush or the Marionnaud N° 32 angled blush brush. 🙂
