I’ve been eyeing the Flower Beauty line (yes, Drew Barrymore’s makeup collection!) for the longest time, but I finally decided to bite the bullet a couple of weeks ago when I saw some lipstick swatches that looked remarkably like MAC’s Betty Bright. That turned out to be a dud dupe, but a great lipstick by itself.
The Color Play Crème Shadows were always high up on my list of things to try, so I bought two of them as well: Orchid-ing Around, a blackened orchid shade, and Vine of the Times, a pretty light green. Both have shimmer in them, though the green looks like a cream.
Swatches, L-R: Orchid-ing Around and Vine of the Times
First up is Orchid-ing Around. Although it probably looks scarier, it’s actually the “safer choice,” since it’s close to being a black. As mentioned, it is a blackened orchid with quite a bit of glitter/shimmer, though it’s not anything chunky. I thought this would be an interesting base color to layer some lighter shades on top of.
These cream shadows come with a stopper, not unlike the L’Oreal Infallible Shadows, which are pressed pigments. However, since these are creams, the product tends to cling to the stopper. This makes for an overall messy experience and I would actually try to use a synthetic brush for application.
Vine of the Times looks like an opaque cream, but it’s actually got quite a shimmery, pearly finish. It’s a light spring green, and I was drawn to it because I don’t think I have anything quite like it. Most of my greens are quite dark, so this was something new.

Eyes: Vine of the Times, UD Pistol, NYX eyeliner in Moss, Eye of Horus Natural Smokey Eye Pencil. Cheeks: The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Dome in Crazy for Coral. Lips: Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Boy.
Here’s a look I made using Vine of the Times. I used it all over the lid, patted on Pistol from the Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette on the outer half and then lined the outer 2/3 of my eye with a NYX Eyeliner in Moss. I also used a black kohl for the lower waterline for some definition as this eye look is pretty light in general.
It’s quite pretty, actually.
I think it’s sort of a fun and different look for me, especially now that I am trying to venture out into wearing colors on my eyes instead of neutrals but not really seeking to be too loud. Anyway, like I said, this verver easy eye look is quite pretty, owing much to Vine of the Times. But without a primer or a base of some sort…
Welcome to Crease Central!
Yuckity yuck yuck. Pretty disappointing. I broke my makeup ban for you! Le sigh.
It’s not too terrible, though I suppose it being a drugstore brand really shows here. I’m pretty sure that it will be fine over Urban Decay’s Primer Potion, but I had hoped it would be a cruelty-free alternative to my much-loved MAC Paint Pots, Benefit Cream Shadows, and Maybelline Color Tattoos. I think I’ll stick with LUSH’s offerings.
Have you tried any of these Color Play Crème Shadows? What did you think?
Flower Beauty is cruelty-free and sold exclusively at Walmart. I bought mine from Bon Marche.
Ah that’s a sad experience. It’s really sad to see product fails like this, especially drugstore brands.
I’m actually more disappointed when a high-end product fails because you expect better quality since you paid more for them.
Thanks for the review. I almost ran out and bought the pretty green color. Too bad it creases like there’s no tomorrow!
No worries! I have exceptionally oily lids, though, lol so these might still work for you!
I was supposed to buy these from Bon Marche too (there’s a lilac shade that looked really pretty), but yeah I heard that it creased daw! Aww man!
Yeah! 😦 Lilac You A Lot! Haha I was looking at that but decided it was too light for me.
I definitely agree that these aren’t a replacement for the paint pots, although I actually like this texture more. I personally didn’t have any more issues with creasing than I do with paint pots or any other cream shadow. I just don’t love the color range. I wish they had mattes and more neutrals. Oh – and the stopper/packaging does cause me to use it less than I would, because I find on busy mornings when I’m rushing to get ready, I don’t reach for it because it takes some time/carefulness not to make a mess
Yeah, they have so much sparkle, huh? And yeah, the packaging is quite a hassle for me, too. Do you have, by any chance, a good CF dupe for the MAC Paint Pots or the Benefit ones? They’re still my faves. I love LUSH’s but they expire so soon. 😦
Such a pretty shade of green!
I thought so, too!
So those are more mousse-like, I guess! I do like the look you did with it a lot though! 🙂
Totally more mousse-y! Thank you so much. 🙂
I was eyeing these too but were sold out na when I inquired! Too bad they crease and aghhhh – the messy messy kind of cream! Me no likey. Thanks for reviewing these, carz! Im catching up on your posts pa grabe! Love your daily updates but i cant keep up!! Hehe.
HAHAHA sorry naman! It’s just that it’s eye month this month and I want to squeeze in all that I can. 😀 Yeah, if you’re looking for a cream eyeshadow na CF, try the ones by LUSH. If you’re fine with non-CF, I always liked MAC Paint Pots, the Benefit cream shadows, and Maybelline 🙂
Wow, that green looks great on you! It’s really pretty. I included some of the cream shadows in my UK swap but never tried them for myself. I DID pick up 2 Flower Beauty lip butters & a lip gloss which I loved 🙂 Sounds like your shadow would be great over a primer though, I don’t chance eye shadows without primer anymore. Thanks for sharing!
Thank ya! 🙂 I usually have awesome experiences with cream shadows and the reason why I like using them is because they usually eliminate the need for a primer. Le sigh!

LOL – “I broke my makeup ban for you!” Reminds me of this epic scene:
(Not sure if that will work). From Orange is the New Black 😀
That’s such a beautiful and unique green, it’s a shame it didn’t end up performing as beautifully as it looked 😦
I’m so annoyed lol, but I guess I asked for it by buying makeup on a ban. 😡
Did nat see the scene in the comment! LOL but I’m sure I’ll know it when I see it!
