I’ve been toying around with this idea for a while, but I just couldn’t push through with it for some reason… Until I finally decided to just do it. I think I had a hard time thinking of features that would actually work—there were a lot of potentially fun ones—but sometimes, there are things that you think about too much that you end up not doing them. And I didn’t want that to be the case for this particular series, so here we are. Wes Anderson. I’m sure you all know him by now, or at least, the movies he’s made. Half the population went as Sam and Suzy from Moonrise Kingdom for Halloween not so long ago, after all. But for the uninitiated, Wes Anderson is an American director, and he made my favorite movie, Rushmore. He has a very strong sense of aesthetics and I just think that his work is such a fun thing to kind of merge with makeup, just because it is already so visually strong and distinct. For Wes Anderson week, I just have a few looks based on different aspects of his films, as well as other features, which you will obviously see later this week. For the past few weeks, I’ve been trying on looks based on some of his theatrical posters:

Rushmore (1998)

This is, perhaps, the first Wes Anderson film I watched. I think I might be the only person I know who can relate with—and I mean, the real kind of empathy, deep-in-my-heart relatability—the pain-in-the-ass protagonist, Max “I WROTE A HIT PLAY!” Fischer. I made my Philosophy professor watch this movie, and he said that he wished Max Fischer was real, so that he could “punch him in the face.”

I was hoping I’d get away with a sky blue, navy, red look based on the general appearance of Mr. Fischer over here, but the poster has copious amounts of yellow. So I rolled with it, but made it gold.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

The Darjeeling Limited is another family drama, with the focus centered on three different brothers who don’t get along. They board a train across India, after last seeing each other at their father’s funeral, with the intention to reunite with their estranged mother, who did not attend. The trip, planned by the eldest brother, was also supposed to be a spiritual journey that the other two brothers are reluctant to go on.

The poster has a mix of greens and gold/yellows, and a punch of warmth from red-toned props.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Anderson’s latest release is The Grand Budapest Hotel, which was such a great film! I think it might be his most accessible one, and I’m pretty surprised that it veered away from his usual themes of family. Ralph Fiennes was so good in this movie, quite unlike his roles that I’m used to.

Similar to The Royal Tenenbaums‘ color palette, The Grand Budapest Hotel‘s seems to be dominated by a light, pastel-y pink, sprinkled with a bit of grey-blue and hints of gold.
