While I was away on holiday, I received two base products from Ellis Faas. Previously, I’d tried three of their Hot Lips* and loved them (review) so I was pretty keen on trying their bases, too.
First up is the Skin Veil*, a liquid foundation. It has active ingredients such as Vitamin E and a special selection of natural minerals, and is suited for all skin types. There is no scent, parabens, or animal testing. (!)
Product description: “With an exceptional balance of high-quality ingredients, Skin Veil glides on in a thin layer, blending into the skin. A foundation that illuminates the skin without feeling or appearing like a mask.
To achieve a porcelain, even skintone. Skin Veil minerals diffuse light across the skin’s surface, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. ELLIS FAAS foundation incorporates moisturising ingredients which nourish and protect the skin.”
The texture is quite dense and not runny, though it is very easy to distribute all over the face and blends in beautifully. The recommended method is to apply Skin Veil on the T-zone and spread it outwards, resulting in a natural-looking coverage. A second layer may be added to build up coverage, too.
The Skin Veil comes in a frosted glass bottle (1.014 fl. oz.), but it also comes in the signature pen housing that Ellis Faas products typically come in, (.237 fl. oz. with a refill). I somehow feel like the glass bottle is the better packaging for liquid foundation, but that’s just me. The pen is pretty handy to bring around, however.
Here are swatches of both the Skin Veil and the Concealer:
S103L and S203 are described as “fair/medium, for caucasian skin with neutral undertone.” S104L and S204 are described as “medium, for light olive skin with a yellow undertone.”
Here they are in use:
Wearing a light layer of Ellis Faas Skin Veil in S104L* over sunscreen, set with Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Pressed Powder in Shade 2. No concealer!
(The lighting here is super bright, but—) Wearing Ellis Faas Skin Veil in S103L* and Ellis Faas Concealer in S203* under Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light and Radiant Light
Wearing Ellis Faas Skin Veil in S104L* and Ellis Faas Concealer in S204* over Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Complexe in Shade 2 and under Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light
Wearing Ellis Faas Skin Veil in S104L* and Ellis Faas Concealer in S204* over Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Complexe in Shade 2. Concealer set with Le Métier de Beauté Eye Brightening and Setting Powder in Refresh, rest of the face set with Le Métier de Beauté Anti-Aging Pressed Powder in Shade 2
S104L blends in pretty well for me, and S103L is a tad too light and can accentuate some dry patches on my skin. My favorite way of wearing these is to blend the two shades together for an even closer match.
The Skin Veil definitely needs to be set with a powder, when you live in tropical humidity. It has SPF 15, but I’m not super comfortable with just that, so I layer it on top of sunscreen… which doesn’t bode so well for my face when I’m sweating all the time. It gives a very dewy finish, even without the help of other highlighters or luminizing primers.
The best thing about it for me is that it’s lightweight and doesn’t feel greasy, even though it imparts dewiness. Touching up with a translucent powder throughout the day also doesn’t make it cakey, which is a plus for me.
Next up is the Concealer* which is dispensed from a twist-up bullet pen, with a brush tip much like concealer/highlighters like the YSL Touche Eclat and L’Oreal Magic Lumi. This concealer “offers high coverage To reduce the appearance of blemishes, pigmentation spots and dark circles,” and has four active ingredients: Vitamins C and E, Karité Oil and Rice Wax. It is also suited for all skin types.
Product Description: “With a unique blend of ingredients such as Karité oil and rice wax, ELLIS FAAS concealer immediately blends into the skin for a flawless finish. Vitamins E and C in the formula hydrate and have anti-aging and regenerating properties.
The secret to seamless concealer coverage lies in its relation to the foundation colour: darker skin demands more contrast between concealer and foundation, while lighter skin requires foundation and concealer that are more similar in colour. Paired with Skin Veil, ELLIS FAAS concealer accommodates these dramatic differences in the requirements of different skin tones.”
The great thing about the concealers is that they are great for use under the eye or on blemishes. The pigmentation and coverage is about a medium, so there’s no “makeup feel” for it—just a natural-looking, skin-like veil for unwanted pigmentation. Here, I’ve used the Ellis Faas Concealer in S204 alone:
I used it under my eyes and on blemishes and set the under-eye area with Snoe Beauty Poudre Phenomenon, a loose translucent powder.
Here’s S203* by itself under my eyes and on blemishes. It works surprisingly well (this shade is a touch cooler and lighter than my natural skin tone), and I like that I don’t have to set it with powder and that it’s got good coverage.
Overall, I’ve been enjoying wearing these bases and they have earned a spot in my recent makeup rotation, taking the place of some of my previous favorites. 🙂
