I don’t go to the beach that often so when I have a sunburn crisis, I kind of don’t really know what to do about my makeup. Since getting several shades darker, here are some of my favorite items to use—figured out after a few sessions of trial and error.
Skin Care
Sunbunrt skin tends to be dry and flaky. The day I got back, I had to go to a dinner, and I made the mistake of applying foundation on my dried up dry skin and by the end of the night, the situation was so not pretty. Even though the base I used was a liquid foundation with a dewy finish, it still wasn’t enough for my parched skin.
My moisturizers of choice are Indie Lee Squalane Oil in the morning and One Love Organics Skin Savior Beauty Balm at night.
Sun Protection
I like to load up on the SPF, despite the burnt wreckage that is my face, so I don’t go lower than SPF 30. The ones in my current rotation are the Kosé Suncut Water in UV Protect Essence SPF 50+ PA++++, which I use on my face and body, and something new I’m trying out, the Sunday Riley Cashmere SPF 30+ Advanced Sun Defense*, which sinks into the skin almost immediately. Review is forthcoming, but it’s safe to say that I like this one a lot.
Face Base
Like I said, I don’t like wearing an actual base if I don’t have to, since my skin is so dry at this point. What I do is take a concealer under my eyes, then powder everything off with a light dusting of setting powder. Although I’m trying to use up my NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer right now, the consistency of it has gone really, really thick and the shade I have is too light for my skin right now.
I’ve been using the K-Palette Cover Control 0 Kuma Concealer in Type 1* on my under-eye area before finishing off with my trusty compact of Le Métier de Beauté Peau Vierge Anti-Aging Pressed Powder in Shade 2.
So, that’s what I’ve been doing while I wait for the dry, peeling skin to get over itself and leave, haha. I actually like it this way since it’s so low maintenance, but I do miss using some of my foundations.
What do you do, post-sunburn?

I slather on the cooling gel, hahaha! My current favorite is the 92% Aloe Vera soothing gel from Nature Republic. It comes in a pretty big tub and you can even use the gel for many other things! NR’s AFTER SUN Jeju Cactus Soothing Gel is lovely as well.
I gave away my aloe vera gels to my gf because she’s out in the sun much more than I am! I should’ve kept a little tub to myself!
I know it’s wrong since the skin is so raw but I exfoliate at day 3 to speed up the peeling process :[ I don’t want to recommend since I haven’t tried it myself but I wonder how steaming helps / hurts the healing process.
Omggg haha I wouldn’t dare. It sounds so intense!
