5 Product Face No. 6: All Hands on Deck!

My friends, it has been a while since my last “5 Product Face” post, and this time I thought it would be nice to use products that don’t require any tools besides my hands. I picked out these products before checking my last post… and realized that they are actually quite similar in method. Oops. K-Palette 24H Real-Lasting 2-Way Eyebrow (G101)* // Ellis Faas Concealer (S203)* // Happy Skin Cosmetics Eye Am Here to Stay Gel Liner (Chic Brown) // Illamasqua Cream Foundation (CF 320) // Addiction by Ayako Cheek Stick (Rose Bar) So, I just used the concealer as a base—the Ellis Faas Concealer* has great coverage that isn’t dewy or wet-looking but can forego the use of a setting powder—with the Illamasqua foundation as a contour product. I bought it on extreme sale for that purpose. Rose Bar, again, on my cheeks and lips, and a pretty brown creamy liner for eye definition. P.S. CHECK OUT HOW DIFFERENT MY FACE SHADE IS FROM MY NECK. Ridiculous. If your face and neck don’t match, …

Ellis Faas Skin Veil* & Concealer*

While I was away on holiday, I received two base products from Ellis Faas. Previously, I’d tried three of their Hot Lips* and loved them (review) so I was pretty keen on trying their bases, too. First up is the Skin Veil*, a liquid foundation. It has active ingredients such as Vitamin E and a special selection of natural minerals, and is suited for all skin types. There is no scent, parabens, or animal testing. (!) Product description: “With an exceptional balance of high-quality ingredients, Skin Veil glides on in a thin layer, blending into the skin. A foundation that illuminates the skin without feeling or appearing like a mask. To achieve a porcelain, even skintone. Skin Veil minerals diffuse light across the skin’s surface, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. ELLIS FAAS foundation incorporates moisturising ingredients which nourish and protect the skin.” The texture is quite dense and not runny, though it is very easy to distribute all over the face and blends in beautifully. The recommended method is to apply Skin …

Preview: new in the mail

Occasionally, I’m lucky enough to receive some products from companies to try and test out for you guys. (And for me, too. Hehe.) This is a selection of the items I got in the mail since arriving back home, a.k.a. my backlog. I’ll be hopefully reviewing some of them in the days to come. 🙂 So, this is kind of a haul, but I hate it when people include gifts or PR samples in their “hauls,” so this isn’t technically a haul. You know what I mean. From the always-fun Korean brand, Too Cool for School, I received 3 of their new bestsellers: the Kiss Time Ice Beam (a moisturizing lip gloss with a “dual jelly system” that ensures vivid color expressions and gives the illusion of a lipstick, Php 435), the Max in Pocket (pocket-sized lip balm for always vital and moist lips, Php 605), and the Smoky Nude Lip (a soft nude lipstick to show off dark smoky makeup, Php 715). They have a new kiosk at SM Megamall Fashion Hall, so be …

October Favorites

I often add a space in my calendar to put in a “monthly favorites,” though I don’t always have “enough” products to show that would warrant an entire post. This is especially true for the month of October, most of which I spent in a different country. I do have a couple of skin favorites and mainstays that are similar to that of the last favorites post I did, but I hope you guys don’t mind if I also share some recent finds that I have been loving lately. One Love Organics Brand New Day Scrub & Masque This powder is to be mixed with water (to act as a scrub) or Greek yogurt/honey (to use as a mask). When I remember to use this—just about twice a week—my skin feels so refreshed and clean after. This will definitely be a mainstay in my routine. I just wish it were a bit easier for me to get. La Roche-Posay Redermic R and Redermic R Eyes This range is an anti-aging treatment that contains retinol, which …

Ellis Faas - Identity Revealed

Identity Revealed: a filmed triptych by Ellis Faas

Earlier this week, I received an email about a new venture by Ellis Faas—a short film. I’ve always been intrigued by her, as she is one of the most successful makeup artists in the industry. Her line is also brilliant, and she began as a photographer. Last Thursday, the former queen of the Netherlands Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix opened a new exhibition at De Nieuwe Kerk (which is an old church) in Amsterdam: “Magical Africa – Masks and Sculptures from Ivory Coast. The Artists Revealed”. For this exhibition, the curators commissioned a film by makeup artist/photographer/filmmaker Ellis Faas, asking Ellis to draw inspiration from the traditional masks from Ivory Coast. “Since ancient times, humans have been using masks – in order to express power and authority; to feel self-confident; to stand out or to hide behind; to not be recognised and disappear into the masses. Not only by traditional masks, but also by disguising and ornamental elements such as clothing, jewellery, hair and makeup. But can one truly change one’s identity, or is it …

Made-Up History: Johannes Van Hoytl the Younger’s “Boy with Apple,” 1669

Yay, a new Made-Up History—finally!—and one for Wes Anderson Week. This painting played a prominent role in his recent feature, The Grand Budapest Hotel. Called “Boy with Apple,” this painting was credited in the film as being created by Johannes van Hotyl the Younger, but it’s actually a fictional painting made specifically for the film by present-day artist, Michael Taylor. (Read more here.) Not to give too much away, this painting (modeled by Ed Munro) kind of pushes the story along its trajectory after everything is set into motion. Anyway, this was the first thing I thought of to do when I thought of doing Wes Anderson Week!

Ellis Faas Hot Lips*

I was sent three shades from the Ellis Faas Hot Lips* range, which is their “latest revolutionary texture for the lips.” Ellis Faas, a Dutch photographer and makeup artist cited by Vogue Paris as “one of the most influential make-up artists of her time,” began her own line of makeup in 2009. Ellis Faas, as a makeup line, focuses on Human Colours—her line is based on the colors that the body naturally produces, making it easier (in theory) to strike a balance between your own skin tone and the shades of makeup you choose. “From the tawny peach of a freckle to the pure, vivid red that pulses through our veins, the ELLIS FAAS Human Colours collection looks to the human palette for inspiration. The colours that exist naturally in our bodies are complex and rich, but they’re also universal, shared by each and every one of us. Based on this universal spectrum, ELLIS FAAS Human Colours complement all skin tones, and when it comes to looking one’s best, what better way to highlight a …
