Recently: Maybelline Volum’Express The Rocket Mascara* & Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara

Ah, can you hear that? That’s the sound of disappointment. Not because The Rocket is bad. I’m disappointed because this is another SUPER GOOD and SUPER AFFORDABLE drugstore mascara that I can’t repurchase because of its animal testing policy. I got The Rocket from the BDJ Box this month and I couldn’t wait to crack it open and try it on. Unfortunately, I liked how it looked. Funnily enough its wand is not something I normally like, and though it looks chunky, it actually is easier to wield than it looks. I can get to the hard-to-reach parts of my eyelashes with ease, and the formula is light and not goopy, but it is also not very dry either. I love that it’s super buildable and it doesn’t dry to a crustiness that can’t be retouched or added to, like some mascaras I’ve tried. The Rocket adds volume, holds a curl, and doesn’t clump or make your lashes stick together. It’s also a good mascara to layer with. I’ve used it over another Maybelline Mascara, …

FairyDrops VolumeBurst Mascara (Film Type)

Here’s a quick review of FairyDrops VolumeBurst Mascara (Film Type), which I got way back in April when I went to Japan. I only opened it fairly recently, as I was trying to finish up some mascaras before cracking open a new one. Predictably, I was super excited to use it, but I quickly found out that the formula was way too goopy for me. Dejected, I set this aside and didn’t really reach for it all that much, but determined, I wanted to see if I could make it work for me. FairyDrops is kind of like an elusive unicorn, especially for mascara-lovers in the Western side of the world. To my knowledge, very rare shops carry (or have carried) this brand, but those who have tried this favored it over other mascara formulas. I randomly picked this one up, without knowing which type it was, but the VolumeBurst mascaras don’t seem to be the most raved-about formulas from the FairyDrops range. I think these mascaras are identifiable by their weird, caterpillar wands, comprised …

Mascara Magic

Or, how I make the most out of my short, uncurlable lashes. It’s been a point raised on this blog a couple of times—Why don’t you ever wear mascara? I used to go and do this extra step, but for reasons of laziness (mascaras are the worst to remove when you are tired and want to go to bed), and frustration, I haven’t been bothering. Lately, I’ve found quite the perfect solution for me. While it won’t give me va-va-voom lashes or any sort of volume that would make me want to stop trying falsies, this subtle definition is good enough for me. Are you ready? STEP ONE: CURL YOUR LASHES A bit of a given, but humor me. The Eye of Horus Mascara, I find, actually works better on my uncurled lashes, but the effect is just pretty, fluttery natural lashes. My favorite curler is by shu uemura. STEP TWO: TAKE A WATERPROOF MASCARA Waterproof mascaras tend to hold a curl much, much better. If that’s not the case for you, feel free to …

Majolica Majorca Mascara Smackdown: Lash King vs. Lash Expander

My first foray into mascaras included the Majolica Majorca Lash Expander. Since then, I’ve tried one other Majo Majo mascara, Lash King. They’re two of the mascaras that have worked well on my stubborn Asian eyelashes, but how do they compare against each other? Let’s start with the wand, which is one of the most obvious differences. The Lash Expander has a double-sided comb with teeth that are spaced differently—one side to pack on the mascara and the other to separate the lashes. I don’t find them to be anything special, really. When I use the separator side, my lashes do separate but they become spindly, too. I prefer the wand of Lash King, which looks more like the traditional mascara wands out in the market today. It’s a long, fibrous brush that’s tapered at the end. It can be a challenge to maneuver but nothing that’s exceptionally hard. I like how this coats my lashes more. Lash Expander Frame Plus 12 (Blue) Here is a photo I’m which I use the Lash Expander in …

Sample Stash Sunday: Le Métier de Beauté GWP

When I asked Sarie to get me some items from LMdB while she was on her trip to the States (2 Lip Cremes, 1 Lipstick), she was able to get a GWP for me! Woohoo! The Gift With Purchase includes an eyeshadow duo called Brown as a Berry and an itty bitty sample size of the Anamorphic Lash Mascara. Both came in a cute little drawstring pouch. This is a late review, but I was waiting to finish up a couple of mascaras before I opened this one up. Brown as a Berry is comprised of two light shades: a rosy pink with a golden sheen to it, and a mushroom brown with a similar sheen. Texturally, the shadows are a bit drier than the Le Métier de Beauté shadows I’ve owned and used previously, the main offender being the brown shade. Still, with a bit of coaxing, both are rather pretty mid-tone shades, great to use all over the lid. These are a little light on my skintone, but they are gorgeous in person, …

Drugstore Finds: Maybelline The Hypercurl Mascara*

Allow me to channel LSP here: “OH. MY. GLOB.” This may sound a little excessive, but holy crap. You have no idea how stubborn my lashes are. They look alright in person. If you were really, really, really, really close to my face. I mean, sure. But they do not hold a curl and no amount of mascara would make much of a difference, especially when my lashes go from “barely there” to “clumpy mess” in a matter of seconds. But this, my friends. This is a pretty great thing right here. The wand is similar to The Falsies, which is another Maybelline mascara that I like. It has a sort of curved shape, a design that is supposed to allow you to apply mascara easier since it “fits” your lashes’ natural shape. Are you ready for the results? LOOK AT THOSE LASHES! Oooh. Aaah. I really can’t believe it. That’s probably nothing to get excited about for you, but for me it is akin to a miracle! Another great thing about it? (What? There’s …

Quickie: Eye of Horus Natural Mascara*

A few months ago, I was sent the Eye of Horus Natural Mascara by Glamour Box, via Paoie. It was my first chance to try the brand and I was pretty excited as I had read many good things about it online. Product Description: “If you’re after perfect natural mascara that won’t run, smudge or clump, Eye of Horus natural mascara is exactly what you are looking for. Formulated in the style of the ancient Egyptians, Eye of Horus mascara uses natural, non-irritating ingredients. Ideal for sensitive eyes and Eye of Horus Mascara strengthens and lengthens for ultimate Goddess lashes. Being formulated with nourishing waxes, removal is easy with a cloth warmed with water as the heat melts the waxes, cleaning lashes, making it gentle on the eyes.” What sets Eye of Horus apart from the usual makeup brands is its philosophy. Their products are based on traditional Egyptian beauty secrets, and they are all-natural, and cruelty-free. In fact, they advertise that their mascara can be removed using only warm water, because it’s basically made …
