I know I just did an unboxing post, and I don’t normally do those because I haven’t really been buying subscription boxes or much of anything, really. However, I received the October 2013 BDJ Box and it’s a pretty awesome one, I thought I ought to share it, immediately. Like some of their most popular boxes, this month’s box is brand-centric, this time filled with products by Maybelline. I haven’t bought Maybelline products in a while, since I’m steering my makeup purchases towards a more cruelty-free direction, but I can attest to the quality of most of their products, especially their mascara and lip products. Ace of Base: Making Eyeshadow Stay Put on your Oily Lids

One of my greatest frustrations when I was starting out with makeup was eyeshadow. I think that’s why I was so ecstatic to find out about primers. They made crappy eyeshadow look good and stay put. I eventually found some awesome eyeshadows that work well, even without a primer, but I couldn’t not wear primer once I started. Eye primers are basically the magic glue that bonds your eyeshadow to your eyelids. If your eyelids are prone to oiling up, a good primer or base will prevent your eyeshadow from ‘creasing’—or bunching up in unattractive lines, around your eye folds—and will get you through the day with pretty flawless makeup. There are a lot of good ones out in the market today, and I’ll share with you a few of my favorites. For your standard, dries-down-translucent eyeshadow primer, my top picks are Urban Decay Primer Potion and NARS Pro-Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base. These have worked the best on my eyes so far. Drugstore Finds: Maybelline EyeStudio LuminEyes in Khaki and Grey*

Here’s a quick review of the Maybelline EyeStudio LuminEyes Palettes* which I got in a BDJ Box a few months ago. I got the shade Grey, but my cousin who is not a wearer of eyeshadow gave me hers, which was in Khaki and which I like a lot better. I don’t really get on with silvers and greys all that well (it depends), so I was apprehensive of this palette. It’s a five-pan palette with four shades of one color (in this case, Grey and Khaki) and a small circular pan with a white “primer.” The primer is sparkly, and you can see on the above swatch that it doesn’t really do much to enhance the eyeshadow colors. In fact, it was quite hard to apply with a brush so I tried to apply it with my fingers, which was slightly better but also ultimately a chunky experience. I look like a harlot. Hey everyone! Here’s another edition of Stash Shopping, which is when I look over my current collection and commit to use some selected items for an entire week. I’m on my third week, and it’s been fun. I actually asked the last time if you wanted to see some looks I wore using the selected items and received a mostly favorable response, so before I get into this week’s “haulage,” let me share some looks I made the past week, mostly using the bareMinerals READY 8.0 Eyeshadow Palette in The Cocktail Hour (reviewed here): Just a disclaimer, I work as a freelance writer and graphic designer, so I don’t wear makeup everyday. 🙂 For this first look, I used the coral (Spiked), the taupe-y color (Invite Only), and the purple (Swanky), in that order from the inner corner all the way across the lid. It’s mostly skin care and bath stuff, though, so if you are looking for makeup empties, feel free to skip on this! — Maybelline The Falsies Mascara: It was time to throw it out as I stretched it to 6 months, like a Josie Gross-y. I really liked this mascara, but I won’t be repurchasing as it’s not cruelty-free. — Etude House Proof 10 Eye Primer: Throwing it out because it has become too tacky for me to work with. I won’t be repurchasing as I prefer other eye primers.

Drugstore Finds: Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Peachy Scene*

Here’s a quick look at the Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Peachy Scene* which I got from a BDJ Box a few months ago. The bullet will tell you how much I don’t use it. The color is actually really pretty, it’s just that the scent is quite overwhelming and the frost finish doesn’t help this lipstick’s case. Here are a couple of swatches. Peachy Scene is in between YSL Rouge Volupté Shine in Rose in Tension and MAC’s Betty Bright, from the Archie’s Girls collection. Rose in Tension is much darker and obviously rosier, whereas Betty Bright is a little lighter, pinker, and a ton brighter. I can’t say I’ll miss this from my collection, honestly. Because as lovely as the color is, I can’t get past the smell. It smells like vanilla frosting, which sounds amazing, I know, but I don’t like makeup that smells like baked goods. It doesn’t smell like your typical vanilla smell from MAC. Like, it smells like the baked good you’d use the vanilla for. LOL. Does that make …

Drugstore Finds: Maybelline Color Tattoos

I’ve been wearing a few Maybelline Color Tattoos for a while now, and I realized that I hadn’t shared them with you guys yet. I have three colors: Audacious Asphalt, Bad to the Bronze, and Tough as Taupe. It’s the kind of product that has been raved about so many times that I can’t say anything new about it anymore, really. I suppose that’s a good thing? These are essentially cream eyeshadows that you can wear on their own or as a base for other eye products. These go on very smoothly and are incredibly waterproof and crease-proof. I seriously went for a swim with Bad to the Bronze on my eyelids and it did not budge. These babies are such a great budget product, though a con I think would be that some of them dry out pretty quickly. If you can see my pot of Tough as Taupe up there, you’d see the product separating from the glass, so that’s not a good thing. It’s still a great thing to try out, though, …
