FOTD: September 19

One of my favorite FOTDS in a while. I have a confession: I’ve been mostly putting on makeup in the car, so I go with a few standard, boring combinations because I can’t afford to experiment in a moving vehicle. While I work on the post of my “daily staples,” here’s something I put together on a glorious weekend during which I had the time to actually think about makeup in a fun way. I just went to exhibits and had dinner.

fotd-sep19-a

I don’t know what possessed me to do this, but I’ve been wanting to do a really dark, matte blue sweep over the lid and like, simple everything else. Also, just an FYI, this lipstick is way pinker and more neon in person. IDK why it went all demure in these photos. It’s ILIA Tinted Lip Conditioner in Shell Shock if you were wondering.

Wearing this look made me realize that I miss wearing colors! So much! It’s kind of odd to experiment with eye makeup at the office, I feel like, so I’m kind of D: about it, but also wanting to wear tons of color, too? I don’t know. I feel conflicted.

fotd-sep19-c

I just patted on MAKE Matte Eyeshadow in Storm, which is a deep blue-green, all over the lid, blending it out with a fluffy brush. I added MAKE Matte Eyeshadow in Midnight sparingly on the outer corners—once again, buffed out.

fotd-sep19-b

I kept the cheek stuff pretty simple and neutral: Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Abundance and NYX Powder Blush in Taupe because I frakking lost my KA Sculpting Powder, RIP me. My skin looks so dry! I think I have to stop being lazy re: my moisturizing “routine.”

And that’s that! Thank you for listening to me ramble. 🙂

Bioré Aqua Rich Whitening Essence*

Just a quick post to kind of get my bearings re: this blogging business. I received this a few weeks ago, and have been using it for a little over a month, if I’m not mistaken. So I think it’s time that I talk about it a bit.

To be honest, I wasn’t really expecting much from the Bioré Aqua Rich Whitening Essence* mainly because it seems to be your standard sunscreen and, also, I tend to be automatically averse to anything that claims to “whiten” your complexion. Still, it was worth a shot.

Bioré claims to be “Japan’s #1 sunscreen brand,” and judging from how this performed on me, I can see why. It’s incredibly pleasant to use, especially in this humidity. I find that it’s pretty impossible to find a sunscreen that doesn’t leave your face slick and oily, but this is a true gem. I’ve been using it, with pleasure, every day since I first tried it.

Biore Aqua Rich Whitening Essence

It has the triple benefit of UV protection, hydration, and whitening (debatable as a “benefit!”), all in one. It’s got SPF50 PA+++ which is more than my usual sunscreen, and hyaluronic acid and citrus extracts like orange, grapefruit, and lemon, for added moisturization and glow. The chamomile is what helps with the whitening aspect of this essence, targeting dark spots and freckles.

I admit that I wasn’t planning on posting such a glowing review of this, as it’s pretty boring as far as products go. However, I was so impressed by how it made my skin look and feel, for sunscreen with a pretty dense consistency. It doesn’t leave a white cast, a sticky or unpleasant residue, and it doesn’t make me look like I’m melting. That’s all I really ask from a sunscreen, to be honest.

Biorè is distributed in the Philippines by Vibelle Distribution, Inc and are available in selected department stores, supermarkets, and retailers in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro. For list of outlets and other inquiries: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

Beauty Inspo: One Direction

Yup, you read that right. My One Direction obsession has leaked into my heart makeup life. Well, as far as the two gifs in this post are concerned anyway.

Look 1

Let’s start with the obvious beaut, ex-member Zayn Malik:
Zayn
(source)

I mean, I had a really hard time trying to think of an eyeshadow that would match how gloriously slick and shiny (um, lol) the stuff on his eyelids is. And even then, I failed. See, most of the ones I had in mind that could possibly pass as a “dupe” in terms of shade are a little on the frosty side. Anyway, I think this is actually something like vaseline or a lip gloss, to be honest.

I ended up reaching for Shiro Cosmetics’ Baker’s Boy (from the Hunger Games collection) patted on a clear primer + eyeliner:
1D Zayn Eyeshadow
concealer: Ellis Faas (S204)*, powder: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder (Ethereal Light), eyeliner: K-Palette liquid liner (black)* and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil (Crave), blush: Kjaer Weis (Abundance), lipstick: MAKE Matte Lipstick (Jakarta)

A true fail. But I mean, I don’t think I can ever even hope to replicate any kind of Zayn, so whatever. I tried.

Speaking of Zayn and his singular beauty, I wrote about it for L’Officiel Manila‘s beauty section. It’s all in good fun. 🙂

Look 2

Next up is actually a lot prettier look from Louis Tomlinson, feat. rose petal eyeshadow:

(source)

I think I got the shade selection here more accurately, but if I recall correctly, I ran a cool brown along my outer crease for depth, and it threw the look off, maybe. What do you think? I used Wet n Wild’s Penny, which has been touted as a p. good dupe for MAC’s Expensive Pink, so you could try that one out, if you already have it.

1D Louis Eyeshadow
I actually don’t remember much of my makeup since I put it in the car on the way to work, but I’m sure that I have Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders (Diffused, Incandescent, Radiant Light) and NARS’ Niagara as my lipstick

I think I could have blown the petal pink up, to be honest. It’s still that sheeny quality that I’m not sure how to replicate, if I’m honest. It’s nice to try different things out anyway, I think.

… I don’t know, lol. How have you all been?

Kainda Sensuous Body Wash in Jasiri*

Hey all! We gotta stop meeting like this, I guess. I was gearing up for a Beauty Blog Revival, but then… I got a job! Like, a full-time gig, which I haven’t really had since 2010/2011. So, this explains my absence, I hope? I was losing interest in beauty for a while, too… in a way that it overwhelmed me, but I’m starting to get excited about it again, so that’s a great thing, I think. 🙂

Anyway, I wanted to post about something I’d been meaning to post for a while, but haven’t gotten around to. The upside is that I’ve been using it for a pretty long time and found that I still like it.

The Kainda Sensuous Body Wash* (PHP 649) could just be your typical, run-of-the-mill body wash, except it’s not. Kainda is a pretty interesting brand to begin with: a plant-based, cruelty-free brand that places an emphasis on sustainability as well as utmost care for the self. Aside from bath products, they have laundry detergent and surface cleaners, for the whole natural overhaul.

The Sensuous Body Wash contains hemp seed oil (for softening and soothing the skin), honey and aloe vera (for hydration), and lavender (to soothe both mind and body). It surprisingly lathers up very well and is a joy to have in my rotation of body wash—of which I’m inexplicably a hoarder.

The scent I received is called Jasiri, which means brave. It’s a fruity scent—mainly consisting of apricot, peach, and green leaf—but has hints of floral and woodsy scents like jasmine and cedarwood. It’s not as masculine/crisp as what I usually go for, but I like using it at the end of a long day, when I want to feel cozy. You can double up the scent with the matching body lotion, too!

Kainda uses natural scents, too, refraining from using phthalates, nitromusk, and any of their derivative compounds, since they have known carcinogenic properties.

Another aspect of Kainda that I appreciate is that they pay attention to packaging, too, using carton that is partially recycled as well as a type of plastic that is recyclable. They’re actually pretty transparent with their methods and resources, so if you have any questions, you can visit their FAQ here.

Anyway, I really like it! Here’s the ingredients list if you want to know more about that:

Ingredients
Aqua, Guar Hydroxypropyl Trimonium Chloride, Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Sodium N-Cocyl-L-Alaninate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Alkyl Polycoside C10-16, D-Panthenol, Parfum, Polysorbate, Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, Trisodium Salt, Glycerin, Citric Acid, Methylchloroisothiazolinone/Methylisothiazolinone, Lemon Balm, Chamomile, Comfrey, Honey, Lavender, Hemp Seed Oil.

I know I keep saying this, but I’m on my way getting back on track with updates. I just had to settle into my job for a bit, that’s all. 🙂 Hope you’re doing well.

If you posted something on your blog that I missed but shouldn’t have, please leave a link below! I wanna catch up. Really, this is an invitation for links. Please, indulge me. x

Bits from Makeup Revolution

I’ve been hearing about Makeup Revolution a lot, when I come across dupe posts, particularly those for the Urban Decay Naked palettes. They’re known for excellent eyeshadow quality, even as a budget brand, so I was thrilled to find out that they would be available here soon.

I Heart Makeup Wonder Palette I Heart Chocolate*

Makeup Revolution - I Heart Makeup Wonder Palette I Heart Chocolate -Portrait

Since I have/have tried the UD Naked palettes, I decided to give the I Heart Makeup Wonder Palette in I Heart Chocolate* (Php 890) a shot. A long time ago, I mentioned that I had wanted to try Too Faced’s Chocolate Bar Palette, so when I read that this was a pretty spot-on dupe, I knew I had to go for this. The packaging is a little big and clunky, but it’s cute in a kitschy way.

Swatches

Swatched, L-R: (first row) You Need Love, Piece Me Together, One More Piece, Love Torn, Stolen Chocolate, (second row) Thank Friday, More!, Pleasure Girl, Meet Chocolate, Unforgivable, Love Divine

Swatched, L-R: (third/last row) Smooth Criminal, Chocolate Love, You Need More, What a Way to Go, Endorphins Ready!

Makeup Revolution - I Heart Makeup Wonder Palette I Heart Chocolate 1

I’ve been using this palette pretty exclusively ever since I got it, except when I went on an overnight trip and brought along NARS And God Created a Woman because it was so small. Anyway, this is a great palette—the darker shades actually work well even without a primer. The mattes blend out spectacularly—I’m pretty impressed, since I usually have a hard time finding good matte shadows, even from high-end brands.

I’ve mostly been using One More Piece, More!, and You Need More (lol), but I’m very drawn to Stolen Chocolate, Pleasure Girl, and What a Way to Go. All in all, it’s a great all-arounder and I’m very happy that I have it.

Salvation Velvet Lip Lacquer in Black Heart*

Makeup Revolution - Salvation Velvet Lip Lacquer Black Heart

The other item I wanted to try was the Salvation Velvet Lip Lacquer in Black Heart* (Php 340) which is a matte liquid lipstick.

Aside from it being the namesake of a new Carly Rae Jepsen song, Black Heart interested me because it’s a really bold, vamp lip in what I anticipated to be a highly matte lip shade. I’ve been wanting to try (but holding off on getting!) LASplash’s, but here we are.

Makeup Revolution - Salvation Velvet Lip Lacquer Black Heart - Applicator

The texture reminds me a lot of the Guerlain Rouge G L’Extraits, but these dry down to a much more matte finish and the product actually sets. Application is easy if you’ve got a steady hand, and you can actually kind of layer it to full opacity, if you want to be more careful. The applicator is a standard doe foot shape, so it’s a little tough to be precise, but it’s definitely possible.

Makeup Revolution - Salvation Velvet Lip Lacquer Black Heart - Swatch

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m a huge fan of it, as the product started to peel away. It’s a little fussy, which isn’t ideal for such a bold lip, but it’s definitely a beautiful color, if you want to endure the fussiness. I would probably wear it if I wanted to make a statement at an engagement that wasn’t too long and didn’t involve a lot of eating or talking.

I haven’t tried any other products by Makeup Revolution, but for a relatively cheap brand, the quality is pretty great. I’d love to try more of the powder products. The eyeshadows are especially remarkable.

You can try Makeup Revolution via their website. Makeup Revolution claims to be cruelty-free, though I noticed that their products are marked as “Made in PRC” or People’s Republic of China. (This only means that the product is made there, not that it is tested or sold—and therefore required to be tested—there.) More about their animal testing policy here.

Le Métier de Beauté BVVIP June and July 2015

August marks the beginning of the next cycle of the Le Métier de Beauté Beauty Vault VIP beauty subscription, and it’s the first time in the three short years it’s been up that I opted out of it. I think I have gone down a couple of notches in terms of beauty enthusiasm. So, even though a part of me is excited to learn what they’re sending to subscribers this year, I mostly think it’s a good decision for me to save my money instead.

Anyway, I realized that I hadn’t shared what I got for the last two months of the sub—again with the absence of enthusiasm—so here’s what I got for June/July 2015. Items from the BVVIP usually pop up on eBay, so if something interests you, you could probably go check there!

June 2015: Instant Line Perfecting Serum

This is actually still a “coming soon” item on Dermstore, set to retail at $150. It’s a “heat-activated” anti-aging serum that targets lines and wrinkles.

“Within seconds of applying Le Metier de Beaute Instant Line Perfecting Serum, you’ll feel a warming sensation and feel your skin lifting and tightening. Here’s how it works: darutoside heals damaged, dry and irritated cells to keep your skin healthy and glowing. Rhizobian gum tightens and tones to minimize the depth of lines and wrinkles while caffeine evens your skin tone by stimulating circulation to reduce puffiness and redness.

Hyaluronic acid ensures proper moisture retention to keep your skin plump, supple and soft while antioxidants and vitamin E repel free radicals and environmental pollutants. Citric acid sheds dead cells and naturally adjusts your pH level to keep your complexion perfectly balanced throughout the day.”

LMdB Beauty Vault VIP - June July 2015

Honestly, I’ve only used it once because it felt a little tingly around my eyes when I put it on. According to Dermstore, you have to use it after moisturizer, which I didn’t actually do, so I’ll try it out again and report back. I’m a little wary, though, because I feel like it might make me age faster. Haha, is that a rational thought? Probably not. I still think it anyway.

LMdB Beauty Vault VIP - July 2015 - Lip Crayons - Grapefruit and Pink Peony

July 2015: Lip Crayons in Grapefruit and Pink Peony

Last box was (personally) lackluster, though the people in the LMdB BVVIP forum thread I follow were really excited for these. They just do not seem to be very me, and the actual amount of product (the product melted and kinda fell out of the tube and into the cap—but I put it back!) was also less than what I thought.

LMdB Beauty Vault VIP - July 2015 - Lip Crayons - Grapefruit and Pink Peony - Swatches

I’ve worn the pink shade, Pink Peony, and it looks a little weird on me. It’s good for a boost of moisture, though, and an easy lip to wear. I don’t really like the packaging; the cap kind of scrapes the product.

This is a box exclusive, so I’m not sure what the total value of this box would be, but their lip products usually range between $25-$36, depending on the range.

Anyway, I feel okay about these boxes, but I’m not too excited about them, if that makes sense. These make me feel like I made the right decision to opt out of year 3. I’m still going to be surveying the next boxes, though. Just because I’m a masochist.

Skin Care Savior: Antipodes

A few months ago, I received the best surprise from Liz—a paper bag full of Antipodes! Antipodes is a premium natural skin care brand pioneering “scientific organic beauty.” Created in Aotearoa New Zealand, Antipodes sources its raw ingredients sustainably from the area’s unique native flora.

Antipodes is one of the brands I’ve always been keen on trying (the Aura Manuka Honey Mask has been on my to-try list for a long time), but just never got around to since it’s a brand that had to be ordered online. Antipodes is locally available at Wellness Connect New Zealand, which has a store located at SM North EDSA Annex, Ground Floor.

Antipodes - Ananda, Worship, Divine Face Oil, Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream - 2

I was able to try out four products, and I’m going to write a brief review for each and tell you which ones I ended up liking.

Antipodes Ananda Anti-Oxidant Rich Gentle Toner* (Php 1425, 100ml) — I’m suspicious about rose anything in my skin care; I don’t think my skin reacts all that well to it. This was a refreshing addition to my routine, though I find that I don’t reach for it that much. It’s made from the 15,000-year-old Waiwera artesian water, with Bulgarian rose oil, Mamaku black fern, and raspberry seed oil, the concoction aimed at de-stressing your skin from “environmental aggressors.” Unlike most toners, this is something you’re encouraged to spray throughout the day to give your skin a boost.

Antipodes Moisture Boost Minis* (Php 550) — This is actually a great deal if you want to kind of try out the line and see if it’ll work out for you. The Moisture Boost Minis has a 10ml bottle of the Divine Face Oil: Organic Avocado Oil & Rosehip and 15ml of the Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream. The Divine Face Oil features nutrient-rich avocado oil that helps reduce the appearance of age spots and scars. It’s a great face oil, but keep in mind to not overapply lest you look like an oil slick.

The Vanilla Pod Hydrating Day Cream is a “light but intensive hydrating cream,” which is perfect for dry-skinned me to use everyday in the tropics. The Day Cream, which is probably my favorite among the four, has avocado oil, Manuka honey Active 20+ (a rating of superior antibacterial potency), and Vinanza Grape, which is a “revolutionary antioxidant” made from sauvignon blanc grapes and is shown to improve skin elasticity. It also smells very good, so I love putting it on in the morning. My skin feels great, I smell great, and I don’t look like a greaseball.

Antipodes Worship Superfruit Antioxidant Serum

Antipodes Worship Superfruit Antioxidant Serum* (Php 1600, 30ml) — I know a lot of people think serums are bogus, but if I don’t feel like using a heavy moisturizer, I usually opt for a serum, topping it off with a very light moisturizer and it works like a charm. Aside from the day cream, this is my other favorite of the bunch! As a water-based serum, the consistency is a little weird (see above photo) and runny, and when it’s drying on your skin, it feels a bit sticky, but otherwise, it’s a pretty perfect addition to my routine. It’s very heavy on antioxidants like Vinanza Grape, coffee berry, açaí berry, among other ingredients. I just absolutely love this one, which is funny because I didn’t think I would care much for it. It’s a skin de-stressor and fights against early aging and free radical damage.

I think you can see how much I love this range. I’ve been having a few stress breakouts (gah, adult acne!) but Antipodes has definitely helped to soothe my mad skin. Once I run out of some of my other staples, I’m going to give some of the other products a try. I’m still thinking about the Aura Manuka Honey Mask, but I think I’ve got my eye on some of the cleansers, too.

Antipodes is available online via Wellness Connect New Zealand. They also have a store at SM North EDSA Annex, Ground Floor.
