Testing the Waters with Urban Decay Ocho Loco 2

Hello, everyone! I’ve been testing out the Urban Decay Ocho Loco 2 eyeliner set for about four days now, and I just wanted to share my thoughts. 🙂 This isn’t a full review by any means, but for the most part, I am enjoying this set a lot. That’s saying something, because I am not a big liner girl, since I usually play with my eyeshadow instead. Anyway, the Urban Decay Ocho Loco 2 is one of their holiday sets for 2013. You get EIGHT 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils, four of which are limited edition shades. Add to that a Grindhouse sharpener, which is celebrated in its own right. I haven’t sharpened anything with that yet, so thoughts on that are on hold. But it’s a really pretty color, and I love that it has a pick thing that sort of deals with the eyeliner/product gunk build-up by near the blades. Here are the initial swatches, from L-R: Roach, Twice Baked, Crave, Perversion, Mars, Deep End, Ultraviolet, and Tornado. These glide on so well and …

Winging it out: Winged Eyeliner for Weird Fold-y Eyes

After “Eye Month,” or this blog’s month-long special on eye makeup, I really felt like I had a good grasp of my eye shape and how to work with it. As I’ve detailed in this post, My Ocular Affliction, aside from typical Asian eyes (save for a monolid), I had a weird fold on one eye that didn’t match the other. This made for a difficult time when I want to wear my eyeliner a certain way. Since then, I’ve figured out how to create a subtle wing without making myself look like an asshole. By starting the eyeliner from the middle of the eye, I can trick people into thinking that my eyeliner is even, even though it’s not: You can add a little flick on the outer corners by angling the line upward and outward. For more definition (though this will highlight the difference in eye shape), you can also connect this upper line to a line on your lower lash line. If you were wondering, I used the TONYMOLY Backstage Gel Liner …

TONYMOLY Backstage Gel Liner in Diva Grey*

And for my next trick—a gel liner! The Backstage Gel Liner is one of TONYMOLY’s bestselling products, and I can totally see why. It applies smoothly and opaquely, and the liner itself is creamy to the touch. Once it sets, however, it won’t budge. The color I got was #11 Diva Gray, but they have a lot of color offerings that I am keen to try once I use up a gel liner or two. #11 Diva Gray is a midtone, steely grey with a smattering of glitter. This formula is waterproof and long-wearing—definitely one of the better ones I’ve tried! It’s a pretty dark-enough color for some definition and a little fun (hello, little wing!) but it’s not as harsh or dark as a black liner would be. The packaging is a hit-or-miss for me, though I suppose it’s good for travel. While I don’t like the complicated, unbalanced shape (wide at the bottom, super narrow at the top), I do appreciate that the narrow end is a built-in applicator. It’s quite a good …

My Ocular Affliction

Sorta. I mean, it’s not anything serious like blindness or perpetual allergies. Nothing like that, but it’s a little trying when you can’t do simple things like getting an even thick line over it. You see, my eyes are of a typical Asian hoodedness. However, they fold quite differently, like so: As you can see, the folds are uneven. Which is, I suppose, fine for general eyelining and such: But when I want to wear a cat-eye or a thick Korean-inspired line, shit ensues and I look like an asshole who can’t do her own makeup. I just thickened the line by adding another line on top of the existing one, and check out how it looks like when my eyes are open. Yikes. Asshole alert. I tried lining my wonky eye while it’s open, but while it looks good and even when my eyes are open… I turn into a stupid face when I blink! That’s literally how much thicker of a line I need to draw on one eye just so that they …

Quick Tips for Bright Eyes

There are two basic tricks for an immediate bright-eyed, Disney Princess effect, and those involve a light-colored liner on the lower lashline or an inner corner highlight. For that extra-bright, wide-eyed look, use both tricks. THE SCIENCE BEHIND A NUDE LINER The first time I found out about a bright liner on the lower lash line was when I was watching an episode of America’s Next Top Model. I wasn’t so convinced when Tyra said to use a white eyeliner, so it was a tip that went ignored—until people started talking about swapping it out for a nude eyeliner. Placing a light, neutral liner on your lower lash line makes you appear more awake because it cancels out the red on the inner rim of your eyes, without defining it the way a black or brown eyeliner would. It creates the illusion of bigger, brighter eyes, because there is continuity with the white part of your eye. This is why a light-colored eyeliner sort of creates a bigger eye look, where as a black or …

Illamasqua Precision Ink in Wisdom

The Illamasqua Precision Ink in Wisdom is a product that I wish I used more. I ordered it a few months ago and I’m a little ashamed to admit that it hasn’t seen the outside world that much yet because it got lost in all of my makeup hoarding recent acquisitions. From Sephora: This long-wearing liquid liner comes with a fine tip that allows for defined application, making it perfect for creating a defined eye—or even painting designs on the body. The waterproof formula dries within seconds and stays true for hours. So, I want to bring your attention to the tip. It’s awesome for application because it’s quite stiff, so it doesn’t really flex much and bend all over the place. You can’t get a super fine line with it, but it’s a thin enough line for me, and I’ve found that I prefer this type of applicator over the thin, bendy brushes from the likes of e.l.f.’s liquid eyeliner (review) or Le Métier de Beauté’s Indelible Inks (review). I love this so much! …

Drugstore Finds: Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohls

Today’s review is on a product that I am a little bit scared to talk about because it has reached an insane level of cult stardom. Or something. The Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohls are often touted as a drugstore alternative to many high-end creamy eyeliners because of its rich and creamy texture, as well as impressive pigmentation, and staying power. These do not budge, apparently. And—apparently—I had to try them out. Color me surprised when the first time I used the black liner. I used it to tightline my upper waterline (which, by the way, applies impressively. I have a very sensitive upper waterline) and it was so creamy and smooth, and I loved it. Then it traveled to my bags. And stayed put. I tried it again on a different day, this time on my lower lashline and in between my upper lashes. This is pictured above. Again, after a few hours—a case of smudgerama. Anyway, I guess I should note that I have watery eyes and I live in a country that is …
